What will you be doing?
At TNO we aim to develop the Transactive Energy Marketware (TEM), a local automated market system that optimally matches energy demand and supply with available network capacity. Here, the term marketware denotes an ICT system that implements a market model at the level of the energy distribution network. Currently, there is no market mechanism active at this level in the energy system. The ambition is to develop this system in 4 years to TRL5 (technology validated in relevant environment), with a large-scale TRL6 demonstration in a later phase. The engineering challenge is to realize self-managing characteristics of the future intelligent electricity network, and the stakeholder ecosystem around it, adapting to unpredictable changes and events while hiding intrinsic complexity to operators and users.
The TEM combines a real-time electronic market and a receding horizon market mechanism. For the former, TNO is one of the pioneering parties, while for the latter we adopt the state of the art in the literature. A distributed receding horizon market has been developed that allows for a more efficient integration for renewable energy at a high voltage level. This method is extended to the distribution grid level, taking into account the corresponding change in scale and topology.
What do we require of you?
Your task will be to combine existing methods for solving the short term power dispatch problem, taking into account multiple stakeholders, with long term planning algorithms that attempt to solve the energy balancing problem with temporal constraints. Besides the agent-based heuristic approaches that are currently being developed, the student will use multi-party optimization strategies to find theoretical bounds on the optimization problem.
What can you expect of your work situation?
TNO is an independent research organisation whose expertise and research make an important contribution to the competitiveness of companies and organisations, to the economy and to the quality of society as a whole. Innovation with purpose is what TNO stands for. With 3000 people we develop knowledge not for its own sake but for practical application. To create new products that make life more pleasant and valuable and help companies innovate. To find creative answers to the questions posed by society. We work for a variety of customers: governments, companies, service providers and non-governmental organisations. Working together on new knowledge, better products and clear recommendations for policy and processes. In everything we do, impact is the key. Our product and process innovations and recommendations are only worth something if our customers can use them to boost their competitiveness.
What can TNO offer you?
