What will you be doing?
Urban mobility can take many forms. For many in the Netherlands two-wheeled transport is preferred, particularly for young people. For both companies distributing goods or products (e.g. couriers, pizza delivery) as well as private owners, reliability of the means of transport is an important factor.
Scooters offer fast transport around urban environments. Conventionally powered scooters often have a high noise level, (and often are illegally modified increasing the noise level further) and their close proximity to other road users often exposes citizens to high pollution levels. Electric scooters offer improvements in both emissions and noise, but need to be convincingly reliable. One key aspect of reliability is the prediction of the remaining range, (linked to energy consumption, and battery state) – and unlike conventional scooters, the relationship between the state of the battery and the energy use is not simple. There is therefore a need for improved range prediction for this type of vehicle.
Instead of including a connected computational platform, it is interesting consider to extend the functionalities of personal smartphones, to couple and pull out relevant information about the scooter, as well (where suitable) about the journey ahead.
You will focus on the development of monitoring and real-time computation (either on-board or off-board) to determine the energy consumption and range of the scooter. The collection of data, algorithm, and computation device will be developed by you, to realize a machine-learning approach to prediction.
- The development will use a TNO scooter (available throughout), and suggested platforms are Arduino and android* (for which there exist a range of online support options and guides).
What do we require of you?
- You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, electrical engineering.
- You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, embedded systems, electrical engineering.
- You are familiar with communications made via CAN protocol.
- You have broad experience in Matlab/Simulink.
- You enjoy developing practical solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and pragmatism.

You will work together with a team of enthusiastic scientists on a relevant topic in the automotive industry. You will have the opportunity of using some of industrial automotive related tools. The results will be used in a large European project in which we collaborate with key partners in the automotive field, including several OEMs.
