What will you be doing?
Wide angle scanning phased array antennas are widely applied in radars and communication (SATCOM, 5G, etc.) systems. One of their main design challenge is that they suffer from matching degradation while scanning, because of the dependence of their active input impedance on the scanning angle. A common way to alleviate the problem is to use a wide angle impedance matching layer (WAIM). The latter is a superstrate that allows to reduce the scanning dependence of the input impedance, allowing a larger field of view. The concept has been widely developed in the form of a dielectric sheet or in multi-layer printed configurations. Typically, this solution offers very good performance in one principal plane. However, such improvement needs to be traded in order to obtain sufficient scanning performance in the other principal plane. The consequence is that scanning angles larger than 60 degrees are difficult to achieve. The main goal of this project is to enlarge the scanning range of a phased array combined with a WAIM up to at least 70 degrees. The proposed solution is to design a multilayer printed configuration including the concept of connecting circuits in order to improve the performance in all scanning planes.
What do we require of you?
You are in the final stages of your degree in electrical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of antennas and transmission lines. You have experience in programming in Matlab and/or Python, you are pragmatic and focused on making things work. Next to technical expertise we value communication skills and a results-driven attitude.
