What will you be doing?

Cleavage of water into hydrogen and oxygen gas using electrolysers is an attractive and clean way to harness the renewable sources of energy such as solar photovoltaic and wind.
Sea water, constituting about 97% of earth’s water, however, is not readily available to feed the conventional electrolyser systems: generally a costly water purification/desalination systems is required which along with maintenance/repair costs, renders sea water electrolysis uneconomical. Here at TNO, we have conceptualized a novel electrolyser that can operate with direct sea water-feed and thus making this technology available esp. to hot coastal/arid area with plenty of sea water. You will provide support for the fabrication and testing of this novel concept developed at TNO. In addition, you will learn about multiphase flows, fluidized systems, electrode preparation and characterization.

What do we require of you?

You are an enthusiastic master student looking for an internship of 6-9 months. You have a chemical, mechanical engineering, chemistry or material science/engineering background and you are eager to learn about multiphase fluids/fluidized reactors, electrochemistry and electrochemical methods. You are pro-active and independent individual with good communication skills in English. You will be working with a diverse team of scientists/engineering/technicians with a wide variety of expertise to make up for a great learning experience. Practical laboratory experience is necessary for this position.
Among others, your main tasks will be:
  • Conduct literature search to benchmark the know-how present as state-of-art.
  • Fabricate and test electrolyser cell for proof of concept
  • Participate in group meetings, provide feed-back, discuss results, and propose solutions.

You will be living in Noord-Holland area with breath-takingly beautiful sceneries and living environment. The area, well-known for its sandy beaches in Petten and Bergen, provides a quiet and most beautiful environment for outdoor activities (boating/sailing, swimming, biking, etc.) with easy access to the nearby larger cities such as Amsterdam and Alkmaar.
