Carbon capture is the process of capturing waste CO2 from industrial point sources like power plants. CO2 can be separated from flue gases of point sources with absorption technology. Various solvents can be used for absorption including amines. Over time these solvents are observed to degrade thereby resulting in solvent loss and economic impact on the process. The degradation occurs in the presence of O2, CO2, NOx and SOx species. Oxidative degradation due to the presence of O2 in the flue gas is a dominant degradation mechanism.

What will be your role?

The objective of this thesis project is to understand the factors the influence oxidative degradation of various amines. This will be done by means of process engineering focussed modelling. The model will be used to gain an insight into where degradation occurs, how fast and what measures can be taken to combat this. Candidates should have some experience with modelling in Python or MATLAB and understand basic chemistry along with reaction engineering.

How do you want to contribute to tomorrow's world? How big can your impact be? Come and work at TNO and envision it.
