What will be your role?
To achieve the goal of zero traffic casualties, more and more tasks are being taken over from the driver by automation. In order to function in a complex, open world, Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent in automated driving functions. Safe deployment of AI systems on the public road brings several challenges, including issues of explainability (why did the AI system take certain decisions?), robustness (can the AI system handle situations not encountered during its training?), situational awareness (can the AI system determine its own capabilities in the current situation?) and ethics (how can we teach an AI the moral standards of society?). In addition, both the road authorities and car manufacturers struggle with the questions of verification and validation of the new generation of automated functions in vehicles. The use of AI requires new validation methods that go beyond the current ISO standards and type approval procedures. Challenges include testing for specificity (is the system behaving according to specifications?), robustness (can the system handle unforeseen situations?) and monitoring (can we continuously monitor the system’s behavior after deployment?). Would you like to contribute to these challenges? Envision it and become a Junior/Medior Researcher Artificial Intelligence at TNO in Helmond.
You will be part of an inspiring international team of experts with various expertise and background in the field of Integrated Vehicle Safety, working both in an international and national context, both for industry and public parties. The department IVS is part of the Unit Traffic and Transport, in which we work on big societal challenges in the field of mobility and transport, i.e. striving for "the 3 zero's": zero casualties, zero loss and zero emissions.
You will work in a team on state-of-the-art AI solutions for various automotive applications. For example, using anomaly detection or inverse reinforcement learning techniques to model (ab-)normal driving behavior. Developing neurosymbolic AI for situation awareness and ethical decision making. Using Bayesian machine learning methods to predict the movements of other vehicles and pedestrians. But you could just as well be working on uncertainty modelling for computer vision, or develop a framework to test AI for robustness, or do extensive data processing, cleaning and analysis.
How do you want to contribute to tomorrow's world? How big can your impact be? Come and work at TNO and envision it.
