What will be your role?
Your core business? Collaborating on the development of software platforms for greenhouse design. Specifically, you’ll be working on expanding the TNO software program SIOM and a number of related programs. SIOM is used for the non-construction part of greenhouse design, such as the interior climate, energy consumption or material selection. TNO develops and maintains the software, and licensing is carried out through the Stichting Hortivation (Hortivation Foundation). Around 12 Dutch greenhouse construction companies are actively involved in the software development. Increasingly important elements are the exchange, analysis and application of data, for example on worldwide water availability or geological or meteorological data. You will contribute to this work by developing algorithms and combining them with existing software modules. In addition, you will support the senior researchers in communicating with our clients and with the Stichting Hortivation.
At TNO you’ll be working in the Building Physics & Systems department, in the Hightech Greenhouses team. We’ve been working for more than 25 years on constructive calculation tools, such as CASTA/Kassenbouw, and on international standardisation for greenhouses and other constructions. Furthermore, we contribute to decision-supporting models for designing greenhouses worldwide, which incorporate all kinds of design, climate and plant models. In addition, the development of the e-Growing-platform is one of our priorities. With this platform, we translate data from the greenhouse into specific actions to manage cultivation. Through these activities, we contribute to the global issue of providing food to everyone and we join in global trends such as urbanisation and local-for-local, in which people are increasingly producing and consuming food locally. We’re a small, close-knit team of some 10 colleagues – programmers, modellers and researchers – who regularly do something fun together, such as a treasure hunt in Delft or going out for a meal.Read more about hightech greenhouses at TNO
