What will you be doing?
The Faraday lab, the new research infrastructure of the electrochemistry team at TNO Petten, will be completed in the first half of 2020. As junior scientist you will be responsible for setting-up and carrying out experiments to characterize electrochemical cells and systems, such as polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis cells. A keen eye for improving experimental methods, a critical mind-set with regard to interpretation of results, allows you to contribute to bringing the quality of the experimental work in the Faraday Lab to the highest level. You report results and conclusions in a transparent and insightful way and you have a pro-actively attitude in developing testing procedures and protocols together with your colleagues. You keep up-to-date with state-of-the-art (test) cell manufacturing, analysis methods at TNO and on the international level.
The unit Energy Transition develops innovative technologies for the transition to a sustainable society. One of the focus areas of the expertise group Biomass and Energy Efficiency (BEE) within that unit is development of technology for the production of green hydrogen by electrolysis. The unit has a program on both high-temperature (SOFC) and low-temperature (PEM) electrolysis. We have recently received a grant from the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) to expand our research facilities.
BEE is looking for junior scientist to join the electrochemistry team. The focus of our research is on working together with industrial partners to reduce the cost of the technology, from better materials to improved equipment design. The development is carried out in PPS type projects such as H2020, TKI-BBE, EFRO etc., as well as industrial contract research. The candidate will be responsible for setting-up, carrying out and evaluating experiments with an increasing degree of independency.
What do we require of you?
The ideal candidate preferably has experience in the field of electrochemistry. Is able to organize his/her work well. Has demonstrated a critical attitude with respect to evaluation of results.
You are an open minded, enthusiastic, creative and result driven person. You are a good listener and are capable to translate a research question into a set of experiments. You are able to work in multi-disciplinary teams and can switch easily between different tasks among projects. You are comfortable to work in a multi-national gender balanced team.
- At least an MSc degree in (Electro)Chemistry, Chemical or process engineering or relevant discipline.
- Preferably experience with electrochemical systems
- Good oral and written communication skills in English
- Knowledge of the Dutch language is a pre
- Willing to learn Dutch at the highest NT2 level.

The Electrochemistry team (among others) carries out research and develops technology to reduce the cost of electrolysis as a key technology to the “electrification” of the process industry. Different disciplines, such as material science, electrochemistry, and (chemical) engineering work closely together.
