What will you be doing?

We are looking for a junior scientist with a strong background and/or working experience in experimental research to join our geomechanics group. An efficient energy transition requires a prominent role of the subsurface, for example in the use of subsurface reservoirs for energy storage. TNO’s Applied Geoscience team is addressing the many challenges associated with subsurface energy storage and extraction, resulting in an accelerated growth of research projects on these topics. We are looking for a candidate that helps facilitating the growth in experimental research. Your activities will focus on experimental research to study properties and processes of rock and well materials at high pressure and temperature. Core activities include performing the experiments, developing new setups and expanding existing experimental facilities. You will be working on research, advisory and business-to-business projects addressing subsurface hydrogen storage, geothermal energy, induced seismicity and CO2 sequestration. Being part of a strong geomechanics team with an excellent scientific track record and broad research portfolio, a drive to collaborate, innovate and deliver high quality research is important. Research activities in the team currently have a strong focus on modelling, and integration between experimental and modelling will be a crucial aspect of your work. Part of your work will be to contribute to writing quotations, proposal, reports and scientific publications, predominantly in English.

What do we require of you?

Required qualifications
  • Junior/Medior with relevant background in experimental geomechanics/rock physics
  • Experience with designing, setting up, conducting and analyzing experiments at high pressure and temperature
  • Competent in writing of both high quality academic texts as well as easy-to-read and concise reports, proposals and quotations
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Able to work independently, responsibly and result-oriented
  • Customer-oriented, enjoy working with clients
  • Good communication skills
  • Interested in doing research as well as business-to-business projects
  • Interested in participating in the acquisition of new projects
