What will be your role?

TNO is accelerating the energy transition by developing sustainable technology for and with industry, among other things. To do so, TNO’s Sustainable Technologies for Industrial Processes (STIP) unit has state-of-the-art laboratories. In the Faraday, Carnot, Mollier, and Jules Verne labs, technologies are being developed for, respectively, green hydrogen production, heat pumps and storage, drying and dewatering processes, and separation technology. Consistently innovative and progressive, these labs are being used to conduct experimental research from beaker-scale to MW-scale, under high and low pressure conditions, from room temperature up to 1,000°C.

This is where you as a laboratory manager make the difference. You’re responsible for the daily operations of the laboratories, their safe use, the availability of chemicals and utilities, and all the administrative tasks involved in this.

At TNO, this is not something you do alone. You work in a team consisting of (BSc and MSc) researchers, who also manage the experimental installations, engineers, facility managers, the prevention officer, and of course project leaders. As the team’s linchpin regarding experimental research, you facilitate the labs’ innovative research.

A few examples of the diverse tasks:
  • Initiating and organising meetings with configuration managers and lab users;
  • Initiating and monitoring necessary or desired modifications to laboratory infrastructure, such as gas nets, energy provision, and emission points;
  • Creating and assessing risk inventories and evaluations;
  • Drafting, checking, and issuing work permits;
  • Executing and documenting space inspections, and making sure measures are taken to resolve issues;
  • Managing chemicals, gases, and personal protective equipment;
  • Participating in safety meetings, consulting with the prevention officer, implementing and monitoring safety measures;
  • Receiving and guiding contractors and visitors.

Your more than sixty colleagues within STIP are highly qualified and often experienced people of different nationalities. We all have a passion for applied research on different forms of renewable energy and like to discuss and exchange ideas in an open and informal atmosphere. Identify possibilities and help us develop smart solutions!

How do you want to contribute to tomorrow's world? How big can your impact be? Come and work at TNO and envision it.

What we expect from you

You have a passion for research with practical applications that make a difference. You’re an enthusiastic and proactive person with a keen eye for the organisation’s interests. You’re organised, structured, and meticulous, and you don’t shy away from administrative processes. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
  • You have a hands-on mentality and enjoy working in a lab;
  • You possess excellent interpersonal skills, can easily operate in an international (often English-speaking) environment, and communicate proactively;
  • You understand group dynamics and are able to respond in the most effective way;
  • You’re able to deal with project and facility management;
  • You have an affinity with issues regarding safety, health, and the environment.

The proper execution of your role requires an understanding of gases, chemicals, and chemical and physical processes at higher professional level as a minimum. This is supplemented with several years of experience with practical experimental research in a laboratory environment. Demonstrable knowledge of safety during (process-technological) research is a major advantage.

What you’ll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3000,- and € 4000,- based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
