What will you be doing?
On behalf of TNO you, as a business developer, initiate collaborations with infrastructure managers, but also with market parties that want to innovate their products or processes. Your goal is to bring in research assignments or to sign up organisations to existing research projects. Thanks to you, future customers see the importance of innovation and are willing to invest in it. This allows us to make the technologies we invent market-ready.
You maintain relationships with existing clients, but also seek out new opportunities to increase our sales area and network. You know exactly what challenges the industry is facing and where the solutions lie, because you work closely together with the scientists in your team, attend conferences on a regular basis and build communities of policymakers, operational staff and scientists. You know how to translate customers’ needs into relevant expertise within TNO and are in the lead from initiation to completion of the transaction, including contract negotiations.
What do we require of you?
Management and maintenance of civil infrastructure is close to your heart and you want to do something for our clients (the major infrastructure owners in the Netherlands). Collaboration is crucial in this respect. You know that better than anyone. And that is exactly where your strength lies. You enjoy investing in future-proof relationships with clients, partners, prospects and colleagues, allowing you to build up a valuable network and create unique opportunities to make society more familiar with TNO’s research. You know how to combine your educational and business development background with your enterprising drive. You have demonstrable experience of innovation processes in a complex environment, preferably at a research organisation in the field of civil engineering or a manager of a large-scale infrastructure network (roads, bridges, railways, ports). In addition, you have knowledge of the state of the art and a vision of future innovation needs in one of the following areas of asset management: measuring, forecasting, data management, analysis of decision support systems or extending the life of existing infrastructure.
You can understand (complex) technical issues in a relatively short space of time and bring together the right people at TNO to (help) come up with a solution. Your primary focus is on the customer and the market without losing touch with the internal organisation. You can empathise with clients easily and know how to communicate that to the TNO organisation.
What else can you offer?
• You have preferably done a study in the field of Civil Engineering or similar.
• You have at least 5 years’ relevant work experience.
• Business intelligence, market strategies and market plans, propositions and quotations, particularly in the areas of innovative contract research and consultancy for complex and multidisciplinary R&D issues of clients are not foreign to you.
What can you expect of your work situation?
As an independent research firm, TNO bridges the gap between the academic and commercial worlds. We translate research results into clear applications and solutions. You will work within the market team of the Building, Infra & Maritime (BI&M) unit, particularly within the Infrastructure cluster. TNO has an internationally distinctive level of knowledge and a unique comprehensive approach to issues in the field of research and development for the civil technical infrastructure market. When it comes to bridges, wet structures, tunnels, highways or sheet piling, our aim is to develop technology for determining the current state. We are also working on making raw materials and operations more sustainable. For our most important client, Rijkswaterstaat, we want to be a partner for innovation in the principal challenges facing the infrastructure market when it comes to managing roads, wet and dry structures, and information systems. In addition to Rijkswaterstaat, we also work for other infrastructure managers (ProRail, municipalities and provinces) and private parties. We do not do this alone, but in close collaboration with partners including Deltares and TU Delft and within international consortiums in Europe.Read more about the department here.
