What will you be doing?

Turn data into information. You can do it and you want to do it in a sector where the Netherlands has been a key global player for years: the greenhouse farming sector. As a ‘high-tech greenhouse data science’ consultant, you know the challenges of the greenhouse farming sector and how to meet them with innovative data-driven solutions. What does a platform for digital cultivation in the greenhouse farming chain look like, what information should be collected and how should it be shared? How can big-data analysis and AI help enrich data in order to enhance the operational perspective for growers? How can data, such as greenhouse climate data or simulated greenhouse performance, contribute to developing new products or improving existing products? As a consultant, you will deal with these and other issues. In this way, you will contribute to solutions that enable horticultural suppliers to switch from supplying greenhouses to supplying guaranteed sustainably produced food. Your main customers are the Hortivation foundation and its affiliated technical suppliers. You have great interaction with your customers and know how to translate their requirements and wishes for projects into (technical starting points for) the models, tools and platforms that you develop together with our agricultural engineering and data science specialists. Can you picture it?

What do we require of you?

You are an intrinsically motivated, customer-oriented consultant. You know the greenhouse farming sector inside out. Multidisciplinary work? That goes without saying for you. But picking up tasks independently is no problem for you either. You are analytically strong. You have a solid technical knowledge base in the field of data science and are in your element when you can use it to develop new solutions and opportunities for your customers. You are a real connector, communicate easily and, as you will be dealing with many different customers, you are self-assured.

What else can you offer?
  • You have a master’s degree or PhD in a relevant field such as Data Science & Artificial Intelligence, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Computer Science or another relevant degree.
  • You have at least 5 years’ relevant work experience.
  • You have experience developing data-driven information systems.
  • You have at least a level B2 command of Dutch and English.

What can you expect of your work situation?

At TNO you will work in the Hightech Greenhouses team of the Building Physics & Systems department. For more than 25 years, we have been working on structural calculation tools such as CASTA/Kassenbouw and the international standards for (greenhouse) structure. We also contribute to decision support models for the design of greenhouses all over the world, in which all kinds of design, climate, plant and financial models are combined. A few years ago we added the e-Growing platform to our range of focal points. We use this to translate data from the greenhouse into concrete actions for managing cultivation. Through these activities, we contribute to the global issue of food supply for all, and tie in with global trends such as urbanisation and local-for-local, where people are producing and consuming more and more food at source. We are a small and close-knit team – about ten colleagues – of programmers, modellers and researchers who regularly do something fun together.

What can TNO offer you?
