What will be your role?

The energy sector and the (chemical) industry is in a transition towards the use of renewable energy, introduction of renewable and circular feedstock and implementation of carbon capture, storage and re-use to reach the 2050 Climate and Circularity Goals. 
We are currently looking to expand the team with a highly motivated innovative consultant, someone with a strong engineering background and insights in business models and financial aspects of the energy and feedstock transition.

As a business-driven consultant with an engineering background you will be helping clients (internal and external) with complex issues like scenario analysis, business case development, system integration design, mapping technologies and worldwide technology scouting. You will be proactively engaging with existing clients and prospects to understand their key challenges and needs, and advising them in their decision making process regarding investments in novel technology development and implementation as well as infrastructure and system integration.
You will work in various and diverse projects focusing on the development of a sustainable (chemical) industry, and support the acquisition thereof. Projects may vary from co-funded innovation projects with national and international consortia to business-to-business assignments. You engage in diverse activities that may vary from industrial data gathering and analysis, market research, writing reports, proactively initiating customer contact and acquisition, presenting to customers and partners, making technical and/or economical models and contributing in developing conceptual designs of pilots and demonstration plants for novel sustainable technologies.

The group Sustainable Process & Energy Systems (SPES) based in Delft, the Netherlands, works on these transitional topics with a growing diverse and international team of about 65 employees. We work for and with (renewable) energy companies and the chemical industry in close collaboration with international knowledge partners and service providers employing a multi-disciplinary approach all disciplines. In our lab and offices in Delft a dedicated and highly motivated team of researchers, domain experts and consultants is working on accelerating the market uptake of innovative technologies and system integration concepts to support the transition towards a Sustainable Industry.

What we expect from you

You are an enthusiastic person and able to combine the problem-solving  capacity of an engineer with the business-sense of a consultant, with a drive to develop innovative solutions to technically challenging problems, by combining the right mix of intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic approach. You are a strong team player, and are highly motivated to work in a diverse international team developing innovative solutions for a more sustainable economy. You are proactive, solution-oriented, result-driven, communicative, and have excellent interpersonal and reporting skills. You are flexible and able to adapt and integrate different approaches in order to solve the challenges of customers in the industry. You have a growth mindset to develop yourself and also your colleagues.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO: 
  • 4-8 years of working experience in (technical) consultancy.
  • Being able to combine a customer-driven consultancy approach with TNO’s technological development activities to come up with innovative solutions that have a businesscase in the transition, in a business-2-business context, but also in programmatic activities, for example in the Voltachem and Biorizon programs, the Industrial Transformation program and in cooperation with international partners like consultancy firms and institutes like Fraunhofer (D) and VITO (B).
  • Being able to really understand the needs of the customers, seeing the big picture.
  • M.Sc. in e.g. chemical engineering, process technology or equivalent; a PDEng or PhD degree would be an advantage.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the energy and feedstock transition and the associated technical and non-technical challenges.
  • Familiar with one or more of the following processes or technologies: hydrogen production, electrochemistry, CO2 capture and utilization, biomass conversion, plastics recycling, renewable power production, energy storage, energy efficiency, (synthetic) fuels, chemicals production.  
  • Experience in the evaluation of technologies, analyzing results, using various software tools to support analysis of technology options based on economics and environmental indicators.
  • Accurate, consistent high quality in (peer-reviewed) presenting and reporting.
  • Experience/enthusiasm to work in a team in an international and multidisciplinary environment and cooperate with colleagues at all levels.
  • Good mastery of the English language, both verbal and written. Willingness to learn Dutch.
