What will you be doing?
At TNO’s Monitoring & Control Services (MCS) unit, you will be bridging the world of research and pragmatic ICT-driven solutions in the energy domain. As a Project Manager ICT, you successfully complete complex projects involving a multitude of stakeholders, including market players from various domains such from the ICT and energy sector, as well as government policy makers both in the Netherlands and the EU. Projects focus on the intelligent and adaptive management of distributed, new generation hybrid energy systems towards the optimization of their design and operations and eventually successful transition to sustainable energy systems for the generations to come. The projects you will manage range from overall system studies to technology testing in living labs. Your five to ten strong teams develop innovative proofs of concept and demonstrators. The work is based on research involving large volumes of data, adaptive algorithms and predictive analytics. You’ll be managing a number of projects simultaneously: relatively short-term consultancy for market clients (B2B), but also longer-term subsidized research projects involving both national and international consortiums. At TNO your business case encompasses so much more than its financial merits: though important, the value to society, impact to the environment and the feasibility of high-level decisions at local level are equally, if not in some cases more important. The impartiality of TNO helps you focus on the bigger picture, in which stakeholder management is key. It will be your challenge to mobilize and unite parties with different, often times conflicting, interests, manage project-related risks and flexibly handle the intrinsically volatile planning to deliver future-proof system architectures and digital services.
From our locations in Groningen and The Hague, the 50+ scientists, researchers and consultants of MCS prove the feasibility and added value of digital applications on a daily basis. It is our dedicated Project Managers who provide the sound operational ground for the creativity of research and abstract concepts being translated into pragmatic applications. MCS focuses on three domains: Industry & Infrastructure, Sustainable Energy and Defence. In the Energy domain we realize centralized and distributed control of hybrid energy systems tailored to the local grid situation, matching demand & supply. What do we require of you?
You are familiar with the Energy sector and thrive in an applied research environment geared to developing viable, practical ICT solutions. Structuring and channelling the creativity of researchers, you are driven by the challenges that project management presents. And you willingly accept the inherent uncertainties of applied research projects. Inspiring and motivating people, you initiate and manage projects for which you assume accountability. Your cultural awareness and communication skills help you navigate sensitivities and convince teams, customers, partners and other stakeholders. At TNO we work according to the International Project Management Association (IPMA) guidelines, which is why you would benefit from familiarity with IPMA methods or at least with other project management methods and practices such as PRINCE2 or PMBOK. The role may involve travelling within the Netherlands and post-corona international travel to attend conferences and meetings with partners. The amount of travelling will depend on your home situation and your inclination. You are also free to choose between Groningen and The Hague as your home base.
The knowledge and experience you bring to TNO include:
- a Master’s Degree or PhD in computer science or equivalent;
- at least four years of experience of project management;
- knowledge and experience of the energy domain.

We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3713,- and € 5750,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + €180). You can apply till the 9th of May. The first round of interviews is scheduled on the 19th of May. The second round of interviews is scheduled for the 25th of May. The process comprises at least two (selection) rounds. After a positive selection, we will finish off the process by discussing terms and conditions of employment. We try to complete the interviews and assessment within 4 weeks.
