Because as a scientific software engineer at the department Applied Geosciences (AGS) you are at the forefront of innovation and development in the subsurface energy domain. You will be involved in the entire product development cycle: from idea conceptualization, to design, development, deployment, testing and technical support. You will work on applications for different geo-energy systems such as oil and gas, geothermal and carbon or hydrogen storage. You will be part of multi-disciplinary research projectteams with geologists, geophysicists, geomechanical engineers as well as production technologists both internally as well as externally with our international clients. You will work in a team with highly qualified scientists in which you will be the main focal point for aspects related to the design, development, deployment, and testing of state-of-the-art software solutions.
What do we require of you?
As a scientific software engineer we expect you to be involved in multiple projects across our project portfolio and lead the software development effort within these projects. You are also able to work with researchers to understand their domain specific requirements and translate them into high-quality useable software products. You have experience working with test driven development, continuous integration/deployment and agile work methodologies and can promote standardization of processes for software development across AGS And next to that, you have the following qualifications and qualities:
- A master's degree or PhD in computer science, mathematics, earth science, geosciences, or engineering;
- Several years of industrial software development experience;
- Strong programming skills in Python; familiarity with GitHub;
- Experience working with SQL Databases, C++, C#, Java;
- Experience with high performance computing is beneficial;
- Experience with optimization, machine learning, statistics, mathematics, physics, visualization techniques is beneficial;
- Strong verbal communication skills in English.

The expertise group Applied Geosciences (AGS) within TNO hosts about 50 professionals, for a large part earth scientists and subsurface engineers. Our project portfolio covers the entire chain of resource exploration, efficient production, subsurface storage, and the re-use and de-commissioning of existing infrastructure. Our project portfolio is diverse in scope and size: we manage large national research programs, participate in EU funded research consortia, and provide consultancy services for the private sector.
