What will you be doing?

Welcome to the TNO research group, Optomechatronics! Our group develops high-end optical and mechatronic systems for applications for space exploration, (satellite) communications and the semiconductor industry. We bridge the gap between new inventions from the academia and the industry. Moreover, we help partners and customers to resolve their most challenging questions, and design and develop technical solutions and prototypes.

Over the past few years, our free-space optical laser communications program has quickly expanded and has gained a lot of momentum. We have currently over 15 different subprograms, and are working with small and medium enterprises, corporations, space agencies and other research institutes, both within The Netherlands as well as in an international context. To ‘put a man on the moon’ and realize terabit free-space laser communication links, experimentation is at the heart of what we do. We are currently working on the construction of laser terminals and feeder stations on the ground, and in collaboration with our partners, also in space. As our new colleague, you will be working as an optical communications engineer within our dedicated team, and bring theory into practice. This is your chance to work and experiment with terabit laser communications, ground stations for optical feeder links and pave the way to future high-availability, high-throughput laser communications.

What do we require of you?

  • You have either a PhD degree or a MSc degree with at least 3 years of relevant work experience.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of physical-layer communications and experience with channel models.
  • Experience in the field of free-space optical communications, optics or optomechatronics is a plus.
  • You have experience in the design and realization of test setups, and in the design and execution of complex experiments.
  • You are familiar with RF lab equipment including spectrum analyzers, vector signal analyzers and oscilloscopes.
  • You have strong problem solving and analytical skills, as well as technical reporting, presentation and communication skills.
  • You have a pioneering mentality, and are comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with scientific and engineering challenges.
