What will be your role?
Process heat accounts for almost two-thirds of the world’s industrial energy consumption and is mainly derived from fossil fuels. Electrification of industrial heat processes is an effective way of significantly improving sustainability. But electrification alone is not enough. We also need to find ways to recover and reuse industrial process heat. This is where your research as a PhD candidate at TNO can make a difference. You will model, experiment and design in order to eventually generate innovative solutions for our project partners in the chemical and energy supply industries.
The TNO Sustainable Technologies for Industrial Processes (STIP) expertise group is starting a four-year project that will focus on direct electrification of industrial heat supply and heat recovery. We are implementing this project in a consortium with two large chemical companies. As a PhD candidate you will conduct research on new heat recovery configurations capable of recovering and reusing high-temperature process heat and innovative electrical process heat concepts. This will involve modelling processes at different scales. You will also design experiments to demonstrate the performance of these models and translate them into applications for industry. During the course of your research, you will publish scientific articles and present them at conferences where you represent TNO. You will also help prepare patent applications that reinforce our knowledge position for new projects.
At TNO, this is not something you do alone. You will receive excellent supervision and will work in a project team with three or four colleagues. The project team can seek support from various fellow researchers, engineers, laboratory technicians and technical support people. STIP is part of TNO’s fast-growing Energy Transition Unit in Petten. We have sophisticated test facilities that you will be able to use. Your more than sixty colleagues within STIP are highly-qualified and often experienced people of different nationalities. What we expect from you
You have a passion for research with practical applications that make a difference. You enjoy modelling and experimenting and use what you learn to develop creative applications, such as a new type of heat exchanger. You conduct your research independently but collaborate with our consortium partners and your colleagues at TNO. If the research results conflict with the project results, you are not deterred. On the contrary. You use your passion for your research to unite and win over others while simultaneously respecting the sensitivities and interests involved. In articles and presentations you convey your thoughts in a way that satisfies the stakeholders. You do this in Dutch and English because you will be working in an international environment.
Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:
A Master’s degree in chemical technology, ideally with an internship in the field of heat transfer, or a Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with a specialisation in heat transfer.
Extensive knowledge of and interest in (innovations in) chemical processes.
Practical experience with modelling and simulation software, such as MATLAB, Dymola or Python.

The selection process
Please apply before August 16. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on August 26. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
