What will you be doing?

As a physicist, you help to make buildings healthier, more comfortable and more energy efficient, with the emphasis on the latter, given the huge climate challenge ahead: an energy-neutral built environment by 2050. If we want to tackle this smartly, insight into current and future energy consumption is essential, which requires physical models that represent the reality of buildings as accurately as possible. In multidisciplinary research teams, you develop these models and use them to analyse the physical performance of buildings and installations. Using your models and analyses, construction companies can, for example, provide guarantees on the energy bill of a home or gain insight into which renovation concepts are the most energy-efficient.

Intelligent buildings with guaranteed performance. That's what you're going for. To ensure that your models fit seamlessly into practice, you tune them using real-time monitoring data. Data on physical aspects of the building, but also on the behaviour of its occupants and users. Because if people constantly open the windows of their well-insulated house in winter or are in the habit of taking long showers, this obviously has an impact on energy consumption. You do not collect this data yourself, but you do advise other researchers on it. What data is needed at a minimum to be able to tune the models? In order to include aspects that cannot be captured in physical models, you will collaborate with colleagues who are involved in, for example, artificial intelligence.

In addition to the technical modelling work, you brainstorm with senior colleagues from your team at a strategic level. Over time you will build up a network with key players from the construction industry, the government and other knowledge institutes and discover what developments are taking place. Together with your colleagues you think about which technical innovations can make a difference. For the construction sector and for society.

What do we require of you?

The more complex the technical challenge, the greater your drive to find a solution. A solution that is innovative and meets the requirements and wishes of our customer. But you also think further: What is going on in the construction world? Which physical building models will be needed in the future? And how can TNO play a role in this? You enjoy thinking about this and bouncing ideas around with your senior colleagues. And your junior colleagues can count on you, too. You are no longer a rookie and can teach them the intricacies of physical modelling and project-based and multidisciplinary work.

What else can you offer? 
  • An academic degree in (technical) physics. A PhD is a plus.
  • Several years of experience in developing physical building models in the field of heat and mass transport.
  • Command of Dutch and English at B2 level at a minimum, allowing you to communicate well with our Dutch and international clients.

A team of ten socially driven colleagues with backgrounds in (building) physics, process technology and mechanical engineering. In an open atmosphere characterised by team spirit, we work on innovations for clients in the construction industry and in international subsidy projects for the EU, for example. The insights from our projects lead to new stimuli for national and international standards, such as NTA 8800. But also to innovations that benefit the entire sector, for example in the field of grey-box models, predictive maintenance and self-learning installations.
