What will you be doing?

You will ensure the smooth operation of all administrative aspects of the ESI project portfolio. You will be a member of the ESI Programme office that supports the ESI Science and operations director, the ESI Business director and the Project managers in formulating and managing the financial year plan, the project budgets and managing the available sources of finance. In addition it maintains the financial overview of all ESI projects and activities and of the available sources of finance and human resources. The financial status is reviewed with the Science and operations director every month.
Also as member of the ESI Programme office you provide on a monthly basis insight to the Project managers into the status of the project budget and supply financial information for the purpose of project progress reporting.
Furthermore, you initiate and help with the execution of analyses and the elaboration of proposals needed in preparation of decision making. In addition you support and coordinate the embedding of the ESI business development process in the TNO ERP systems. You will regularly interact with financial control and other project support functions in TNO, in particular on a weekly basis with TNO project controller.
The ESI Programme office, currently consists of a senior project officer and a part-time project office assistant. You will initially work side-by-side with and over time gradually take over from the senior project officer who is aiming for retirement in several years from now.

What do we require of you?

  • You have experience in roles or functions supporting planning and execution of operations in complex organisations, preferably in a technical and innovative environment. You oversee administrative affairs necessary for advising management and preparation of decision making. You have ample experience in usage of Excel and ERP systems;
  • You are passionate about creating consistency between different views, including financial and resourcing, of a complex project organisation, operating in multiple, and sometimes conflicting boundary conditions. You are driven by learning and continuous improvement;
  • You are an analytical, accurate, target-oriented person, that interacts well with multiple teams and at the same time is self-driven and organises your own work. Key characteristics of you are flexibility, supportive, pro-active, reliable and communicative. When faced with unforeseen demands or circumstances you combine creativity with accuracy.

ESI is an open innovation research group centre hosted by TNO with strong partnerships with industry-leading high-tech companies. ESI addresses the ever increasing complexity the high-tech industry is facing in the systems they create through the development of new methods and techniques for system design and engineering. Its extensive research programme aims to advance high-tech industry in improving lead-time and effectiveness of their product innovation process, as well as the functionality and quality of their products. In addition, ESI provides specific programmes for innovation support and competence development of system architects and senior engineers.

The ESI strategic research programme focuses on the development of latest techniques for design and engineering of high-tech (embedded) systems and applications within a rapidly changing technology environment. Multi-disciplinary teams of experts of renowned (multi)national high-tech enterprises, SMEs, and leading academic research groups work together and link fundamental research results directly to industrial application. The dedicated ESI competence development programme supports system architects and industrial engineers in developing their professional skills. Overall, the ESI network represents a unique platform for open innovation that facilitates research cooperation and knowledge exchange across stakeholders.

ESI, founded in 2002 as the Embedded Systems Institute and integrated in TNO in 2013, has recently been raised to the level of Joint Innovation Centre in TNO. Since becoming part of TNO, we have grown in people and activities by about 50% in an expanding ecosystem of high-tech enterprises and national and international academic institutions. Its (founding) partners are industry-leading companies ASML, NXP, Océ, Philips, Thales and TNO, along with Delft University of Technology, Radboud University and Eindhoven University of Technology.
