What will you be doing?

As an expert in system architecting, you are member of a strategic research team, working in one of the ESI research projects conducted in public-private partnership with one or more of our industrial partners.
Your work will be the exploration, development and eventually validation of innovative system architecting methods in high-tech systems. This happens in the framework of concrete and business-critical challenges in multidisciplinary industrial development projects of highly complex, digital-intensive systems and applications. You will work closely with the relevant stakeholders in industry and with ESI colleagues, addressing the complexity using model-based systems engineering approaches. Aim is also to raise the system architecting level at the industrial partner and advance their architecting capabilities by transferring knowledge to their (future) system architects.
You will face the challenge to develop and roll out architecting methods that satisfy the need to reason from on the one hand given technologies and sub-systems (bottom-up) and on the other hand stakeholder requirements, organizational limitations and business needs.
You will be part of the system architecting expertise team in ESI, whose members are contributing in a variety of projects to the long term ESI goal to evolve generic and systematic approaches, in which systems are represented by both quantitative and qualitative models.
Your responsibilities may also include coordination of master and / or PhD students and industrial engineers, as well as coordination of software engineering activities targeting the professionalization of any developed modeling tools.
The projects are executed in close collaboration with product development teams at the premises of the industrial project partner.

What do we require of you?

You have an academic degree, preferably at PhD-level, with a strong affinity with computer science, electrical engineering or related engineering discipline and a relevant professional background, working in- or with high-tech industry in the area of product innovation. You have a background in system architecting and the development of high-tech products and systems. You have experience with stakeholder management and change management in R&D. You are able to critically observe and analyze as well to critically reflect on your own way of working. You are skilled in using information and process discovery methods (interviewing skills, etc).
You are keen to operate in unexplored areas of research, developing novel approaches for design and engineering of complex high-tech systems. You have a strong belief that working at a higher level of abstraction can bring significant value to the product innovation process, where you enjoy creating structure and overview by means of analytical techniques.

You are a goal oriented self-driving professional with a strong will to deliver quality results. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary team of ESI research fellows, industrial and academic partners, and other stakeholders. To obtain the required results, you regularly work at the premises of the customer throughout The Netherlands.

In addition, ESI provides specific programmes for innovation support and competence development of system architects and senior engineers.

The ESI strategic research programme ( focuses on the development of innovative techniques for design and engineering of high-tech (embedded) systems and applications within a rapidly changing technology environment. Multidisciplinary teams of experts of renowned (multi)national high-tech enterprises, SMEs, and leading academic research groups work together and link fundamental research results directly to industrial application. The dedicated ESI competence development programme ( supports system architects and industrial engineers in developing their professional skills. Overall, the ESI network represents a unique platform for open innovation that facilitates research cooperation and knowledge exchange across stakeholders.

ESI, founded in 2002, is a Joint Innovation Centre in TNO. Since partnering with TNO in 2013, we have grown in people and activities by about 50% expanding our ecosystem of high-tech enterprises and national and international academic institutions.
