What will you be doing?

ECN part of TNO develops technologies for the transition to a sustainable energy and raw materials society and has a proven track record in scaling up biomass based processes such as the Milena, Olga and Torwash™ technologies. The unit Biorefinery and Energy Efficiency (BEE) is looking for a suitable candidate to join the biomass programme. An important biomass fractionation technology within the group is the ECN patented FABIOLA™ pretreatment process. Pyrolysis and seaweed biorefinery concepts are also part of the programme. Fabiola™ comprises the mild acetone based fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass to cellulose, lignin and hemicellulose. These fractions are subsequently converted into high value products as well as fuels. The candidate will work on a variety of national and European projects aiming to further develop the FABIOLATM technology focusing on scale-up and the first commercial implementation. The development is carried out in PPS type projects such as H2020, TKI-BBE, EFRO etc., as well as industrial contract research.

What do we require of you?

We are looking for a candidate that is willing to be(come) an expert and excels when operating in a team. You are familiar with applied research and technology development. Experience and a network in industry are recommended. Preferably you have relevant experience our research field and relevant publications.

You are an open minded, enthusiastic, creative and result driven person. You are a good listener and are capable to translate the technological challenges into an experimental plan. You are able to work in multi-disciplinary teams and can switch easily between different tasks among projects. You are comfortable to work in a multi-national gender balanced team.

Additionally, you have:
  • at least an MSc degree in (Bio)Chemistry, Biotechnology, Chemical or process engineering or relevant discipline, with an Ph.D. being preferred from an accredited internationally recognized institute;
  • experience with biochemical/thermochemical conversion (of biomass), organic chemistry and/or catalysis is a pre;
  • expertise and hands on experience in a (bio)chemical laboratory environment;
  • good oral and written communication skills in English;
  • basic knowledge of the Dutch language and are willing to learn this to acquire NT2 level;
  • a proven track record designing experimental campaigns, processing and interpreting the data;
  • proven experience in supervising lab activities is preferred.

The Biorefinery group develops technology for the fractionation and downstream processing of biomass into fuels and chemicals in the existing chemical process industry. The R&D program is a close collaboration with partners from industry, research institutes and universities. The group has an excellent track record in technology development for biorefinery processes. We offer a challenging working environment in a field that is of eminent importance for our future needs. You can apply till the 9th of June. The first round of interviews is scheduled on the 18th of June and the second round of interviews is scheduled for the 28th of June. The process comprises at least two (selection) rounds. After a positive selection, we will finish off the process by discussing terms and conditions of employment. We try to complete the interviews and assessment within 4 weeks.
