What will you be doing?

The expertise group BEE is looking for a suitable candidate to join the R&D team as Materials Scientist.
Materials science is an important expertise needed to support technology development. As a material scientist you will make a specialist contribution to both research projects and will be responsible for (sub)projects in the field of materials science. You use your knowledge of materials together with the available instruments for a specialist contribution to a wide variety of technology developments. For this, several facilities are available ranging from e.g. optical and scanning electron microscopy, physical and chemical analysing techniques and electrochemical corrosion measurements. The material science questions include:
  • The characterisation of the thermal and physical properties of raw materials for and products of conversion processes.
  • Materiallography of metals, ceramics, plastics and combinations of these materials.
  • Determination of the influence of raw materials, reactants and products used on the materials of reactors used in processes.
In addition to the contribution to research projects within the BEE expertise group, you will also contribute to projects for other expertise groups within TNO (e.g. solar, wind and geothermal energy). You will develop and maintain the contacts with internal and external clients.

What do we require of you?

  • You have a MSc or BSc degree (academic / applied science) in materials science and have at least 10 years of relevant work experience.
  • You have a broad knowledge of materials, materials performance and  characterisation techniques.
  • You are capable of independently carrying out the entire process from translating a research question into a proposal for the work to be performed, executing the experimental work and reporting to the client.
  • You can switch easily between different tasks and topics.
  • You are able to build the required network to have part of the work carried out elsewhere (within or outside TNO).
  • You have good oral and written communication skills (both in English and Dutch).

What can you expect of your work situation?

Within the Biomass & Energy Efficiency expertise group, various technologies are being developed for the transition to a CO2-neutral industry and energy supply. The research is conducted in close collaboration with industrial partners, research institutes and universities in the Netherlands and abroad. The expertise group has a track record in scaling up technology with demonstrations of technologies developed at various places in the world.

As a materials engineer you work in a small team  which also provides specialist contributions in the field of materials. In addition, there are a large number of experts within the BEE expertise group who bring specialist knowledge for the relevant technology development. The work comprises a wide variety of tasks ranging from small supporting tasks within projects, to being independently responsible for (sub) projects up to and including setting up entirely new methodologies to answer questions on use of materials in technology development.
