What will be your role?

Researchers within the cluster Thermal Systems carry out projects on the efficient production and use of thermal energy for industrial processes. 

In our state-of-the-art Carnot and Mollier labs we develop and test thermal materials, components and  integrated systems from ~1 kW up to several MW scale. Clients such as end users in chemical industry, paper production, food processing and building materials, equipment manufacturers, system suppliers and process developers turn to us when specific, specialist knowledge is required, e.g. for the development of high temperature heat pumps, compact heat storage, advanced drying and dewatering technology and the implementation thereof.

As a researcher, your contribution will focus on developing thermal systems for industrial applications such as heat pumps, heat storage and the integration of those systems in (future) industrial processes e.g. cracking and drying. Your activities include development of models of thermal systems and industrial processes , execute experiments both in the lab and the field, use experimental data to validate the models, give input from model simulations to experiments and future experimental set ups including full scale industrial applications. 
The challenging projects are carried out in close cooperation with industry and other knowledge institutes, in both national and international consortia. You will regularly attend meetings with customers, e.g. to clarify a research question or present results.
You will be working on multiple projects simultaneously, with independence and autonomy being key in that regard.

Within a project team, you will be actively contributing your ideas and thoughts on possible solutions and carrying out research work, drawing on such things as analytical models, numerical models or experiments to this end. You will analyze and interpret results stemming from the data and your models in your research work and incorporate these results into a clear report. Best of all, your results will often feature in the recommendations issued to our clients to accelerate their transition towards CO2 neutrality!

What we expect from you

You will be uniquely positioned to independently carry out research into Thermal Systems. You are an open minded, enthusiastic, creative and result driven person. You come up with new ideas, challenge the status quo and in that way seize chances and opportunities for innovations in the field. You are able to work in multi-disciplinary teams and can switch easily between different tasks among projects. You are comfortable to work in a multi-national team.
Furthermore, you understand that cooperation with colleagues and external parties is essential for the purpose of accomplishing objectives. You will also be capable of summarizing the amassed information in precise, clear conclusions. 

The ideal candidate preferably has:
  • At least an academic degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or applied physics;
  • In depth knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and energy technology;
  • Knowledge of carrying out (applied) research work, including being abreast of modern research methods and technologies;
  • Knowledge of (advanced) industrial heat systems and their economic feasibility
  • Experience with Dymola and TIL-suite is a plus, as is knowledge on process dynamics and control systems;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English. 
  • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus. Willingness to learn Dutch at the highest NT2 level.

Within TNO you will be joining the Thermal Systems expertise team, which is part of the Sustainable Technologies for Industrial Processes (STIP) research group. This team, a mix of approximately 12 people is occupied in Industrial Heat Technology with a clear ambition to make the activity grow to double that size in 5 years. You will be in a protected environment where collegiality, commitment and passion are key. Some of the team members play a consultancy role, with us having a significant degree of contact with customers and responding to queries directly. Others are focus specifically on the research work. What will your role be? We are keen to hear what you think. We will give you the opportunity to try out all the team’s duties and to indicate your preferences. Together we will find the best match.

The selection process

You can apply till June 27. The first round of interviews is scheduled on July 7. The process comprises at least two (selection) rounds. After a positive selection, we will finish off the process by discussing terms and conditions of employment. We try to complete the interviews and assessment within 4 weeks.
