What will you be doing?
In 'Upstream’ activities the recent rise of very competitive and high-volume Chinese PV producers has caused Dutch and European equipment suppliers to encounter strong competition. Innovation, new products and applications, and demonstration of high process performance are more important than ever for Dutch and EU companies. We therefore increasingly focus on longer term and potential high impact R&D topics, specifically novel passivated contact technology and tandem technology, where a strong Dutch ecosystem (academic and companies) exists.
As the senior scientist advanced passivation, specializing on the topic transparent passivating contacts you will be the scientific lead on our development of metal oxide layers and other transparent passivating contacts. You will give direction to our mission, strategy and research. Your main task is improving the direction and quality of our experimental set ups, analysis and conclusions. Medior and junior scientists and resident PhD’s will come to you with what they think is completed work, but to you is a draft with more potential, and they will recognize the value of coming to you, as you mentor them. You are the scientific conscience for our research, reports, and publications on the topic. However, you do recognize the difference between basic and applied research, and what you focus on is the latter, while strongly connecting to the former.
You will be technical contact for our academic and industrial partners, influencing their research directly through your participation in steering boards or indirectly through a combination of expertise and persuasion. What do we require of you?
You have a passion for PV device science and a deep understanding of (transparent) surface passivating and carrier selective contacts and are able to convert this into applied research. You want to carry the torch to advance the topic. Conversing with professors and CTO’s comes natural to you. You take pride in advancing knowledge, competences and careers of the people you mentor. You have a sharp eye on technical possibilities and limitations of the technologies you see, bridging academia and industry.
- PhD in Physics, Material Science, Chemistry, or equivalent.
- Preferably a track record in bringing technologies from lab to pilot line environment (typically bring technology from TRL 3 to 7).
- Experience with acquisition of national and international research projects.
- Experience with solar cell processing, preferably on (transparent) surface passivating and carrier selective contacts and their integration in completed solar cells.
- Extended knowledge of solar cell device physics, specifically related to interfaces and surfaces.
- Track record in coordination of national/international collaborative projects with different partners (combination public applied and academic, and private).

Within TNO you will be joining the Solar Energy expertise group. This team, a mix of some 40 project leaders, scientists and lab technicians, is dedicated to improving solar cells and modules towards higher efficiency and reliability and lower cost. Our distinguishing feature is applicability in industry in which we have an international track record. We also research new applications. Examples are building, vehicle or landscape integrated PV, and dual use of area like in agriculture or nature conservation.
