What will you be doing?
Replacing the totality of fossil fuels with sustainable energy sources will require a different system, based on innovations and new collaborations. As an experienced econometrist, you focus on operations research in relation to the energy transition.
In project teams, you develop quantitative models and methods that help public authorities and companies to make strategic decisions regarding the energy transition. There are more than enough sustainable ideas, innovations and technologies, but on what basis should organisations make investment decisions? What collaborations are necessary for an innovation to succeed? What are the costs and benefits for various parties? And how can they perhaps distribute these costs and benefits better? You provide insight into the solutions to these kinds of questions and will, for example, contribute towards creating a hydrogen distribution network, implement large-scale seasonal storage of solar heat or build up a picture of social acceptance of sustainability choices.
You usually work on four to five projects at the same time. It is also possible for you to fulfil the role of project leader. As an experienced researcher/econometrist, you are responsible for the quality of the research and you are able to adjust the course of the research where necessary. You keep a sharp eye on the budget and the deadlines, and you are an important sparring partner for customers and colleagues. You also take the lead in developing new methods and improving existing ones.
You are clear and persuasive in communicating the essential elements of complex thinking and analysis, both to customers and colleagues. You present the results of your research at conferences and you have it published in peer-reviewed journals. In this way, you play a key role in the knowledge position of the Strategic Business Analysis department. You continuously develop your network, both within and outside TNO, and you collaborate with scientists from other research institutes and universities, for example by supervising PhD students and postdocs.Read more about Strategic Business Analysis at TNO
What do we require of you?
You find sustainability-related innovation endlessly fascinating. You are keen to understand how innovations work from a technical point of view and you are curious about how society can benefit from these innovations. Is the assignment rather vague or the customer not yet clear about what is wanted? No problem. You are able to fill in the gaps yourself. You use your analytical qualities and capacity for abstract thought to develop your inventive models, mathematical and otherwise. You are then able to convince your customers, collaboration partners and colleagues of the added value of those models.
You also have the following to offer:
• A PhD in the field of operations research or mathematical economy;
• Several years of relevant work experience;
• Preferably experience of stochastic modelling or econometric techniques;
• Preferably experience in the area of energy transition;
• The drive to develop your talents as far as possible;
• A great sense of responsibility and strong social commitment.
