“The great thing about working at TNO is that you act in long-term, complex and high-profile projects, together with clients, both big and small, often facing major political challenges. Stamina and ambition are indispensable in this field!"
What will you be doing?
As Business Developer Energy in the Built Environment, you are the link between the market, government authorities and our specialists in the field of energy performance and circularity for the construction industry.
Your goal is to bring in research assignments or to sign up organisations to existing research projects. Thanks to you, future customers see the importance of innovation and are willing to invest in it. This allows us to make the technologies we invent market-ready.
You maintain relationships with existing clients, but also seek out new opportunities to increase our sales area and network. You know exactly what challenges the industry is facing and where the solutions lie, because you work closely together with the scientists in your team, attend conferences on a regular basis and build communities of policymakers, operational staff and scientists. You know how to translate customers' needs into relevant expertise within TNO and are in the lead from initiation to completion of the transaction, including contract negotiations.
What do we require of you?
Energy in the built environment is close to your heart and you want to do something for our customers. Collaboration is crucial in this respect. You know that better than anyone. And that is exactly where your strength lies. You enjoy investing in future-proof relationships with clients, partners, prospects and colleagues, allowing you to build up a valuable network and create unique opportunities to make society more familiar with TNO’s research. You know how to combine your educational and business development background with your enterprising drive. You have demonstrable experience in innovation projects in a complex environment. You have a strong network within the construction and engineering sector.
You can understand (complex) technical issues in a relatively short space of time and bring together the right people at TNO to (help) come up with a solution. Your primary focus is on the customer and the market without losing touch with the internal organisation. You can empathise with clients easily and know how to communicate that to the TNO organisation.
What else can you offer?
- You preferably have a degree in Energy Engineering, Construction Physics or a comparable subject, along with commercial and business knowledge gained through education and/or experience.
- You have at least 5 years’ relevant work experience.
- You enjoy inspiring colleagues at a junior or middle management level.
- Going abroad for work regularly and alone is not an issue for you.
What can you expect of your work situation?
As an independent research firm, TNO bridges the gap between the academic and commercial worlds. We translate research results into clear applications and solutions. Thereby solving future problems today. We will give you ample time to give due consideration to the situations on which you are working. Project complete? Then we will continue our journey of discovery, looking for new tools, models and advice that will benefit Dutch companies and organisations in the future. With around 3,000 employees, we are active in nine different spheres for a wide array of clients, including governments, SMEs, social organisations, major corporates and service providers.

You will work within the market team of the Construction, Infrastructure & Maritime (BI&M) unit. With a team of professionals you work on making the built environment more sustainable. Key to this is reducing energy use, closing material cycles and ensuring a more efficient maintenance of buildings and infrastructure to extend their lifespan. In terms of energy in the built environment, we want to be a partner for innovation in the most important challenges facing the market. Our focus is on industrial concepts for renovation and new builds, the development of a new generation of heat pumps, heat storage and ventilation technology. We do not do this alone, but in close collaboration with universities (of applied sciences), and as part of international consortiums in Europe. In addition, we work with the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, municipalities and housing associations, for which we want to find a link between technological development and policy, for instance in the area of energy performance standards and health.
