What will you be doing?

Big data and Artificial Intelligence are like a thundering train. Many companies struggle with the question of how to jump on it. But once on that train, which is increasingly gathering speed, it really gets difficult. Because how do you ensure that data collection fits the values of your company? As a senior responsible data science consultant at TNO, you help organisations with ethical issues and create order in the chaos.

Companies and organisations are collecting and processing more and more data. But how do they ensure that they do not violate the privacy of customers? How can companies jointly learn from their (confidential) data in a secure way? And how do they prevent automatic discrimination? Take Amazon's application robot, for example, which turned out to have a preference for male candidates. Here is a task cut out for you as a senior data science consultant. You present TNO's technical solutions in the field of responsible data science to the outside world. In the security domain, in finance, healthcare and logistics, you explain ethical issues related to data science solutions.

How exactly you are going to do that is largely up to you. You teach (prospective) customers how to deal with data. That data collection is not a magic wand, but a model that you can adjust. And that 'computer says no' by no means always means 'no'. In this way you contribute to a fair and secure way of sharing and collecting data. And you narrow the gap between what is technically feasible and current practices.

What do we require of you?

You know how the customer thinks. And how to convince them of the latest solutions your colleagues at Data Science have come up with. Although you are not a scientist yourself, you do know how a technical product works and how to sell it. Thanks to your clear advice and explanation, you can bring in challenging projects. From a social point of view, you play an important role: You show the business community the possibilities of data in a responsible and transparent way. What else can you offer?
  • A university master's degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, artificial intelligence or systems engineering, policy analysis and management. Or a similar level based on extensive experience as a technical consultant.
  • At least ten years' professional experience in the field of data science or technical consultancy.
  • Skills to build a diverse network of customer relations.

What can you expect of your work situation?

If innovations in the field of data float your boat, then the Data Science department is the right place for you. Here the sharpest minds come together to come up with solutions that ensure genuine progress in the Netherlands and across the globe. Consider in this regard standards that enable organisations to exchange data quickly, easily and securely. We are also engaged in developing methods of analysis with a privacy-friendly design, enabling data to be analysed without releasing (business-)sensitive information. And we focus on rendering data analysis methods transparent, making it also possible to explain how certain results were achieved, which is important where decision-making is being underpinned by data analysis.
