What will you be doing?
The work of the Energy Transition Studies group in the field of energy and society is currently growing in terms of attention and scope. That is why we are looking for a researcher who will join our team on the theme of ‘human-driven sustainability of the built environment’.
You work independently and in a team on complex research projects in the field of sustainability in the Netherlands and the impact on players (such as residents, municipalities, local energy initiatives and providers). You investigate the role of the energy transition in people’s daily lives, what it can mean for them, and how it can help them or, on the contrary, hinder them. You are interested in the dynamics between health, work and the energy transition, and how the transitions on these themes can reinforce each other. So as to improve people’s lives. You are interested in investigating how to apply energy justice at local, regional, national and EU level. You work on projects in areas such as natural gas-free neighbourhoods and smart grids.
Sub-tasks include clarifying/articulating the research questions, designing and conducting innovative forms of research, performing analyses, managing and collaborating with (international) teams, reporting and communicating about the results, both within and outside the organisation. In addition, you are expected to contribute to acquisitions and research proposals on the basis of your own experience, network and expertise, in line with the unit’s strategic research lines. What do we require of you?
For this position we are looking for a researcher with the following background:
- You have a PhD on a relevant subject;
- You write easily and have several scientific publications to your name;
- You have extensive experience in setting up and conducting research;
- You have a university degree in (Social) Psychology, Social and/or Behavioural Sciences, Behavioural Economics, Human Centred Design, Environmental Psychology, or similar;
- You can communicate well not only with colleagues but also with other disciplines (technicians, economists, modellers, etc);
- You have a thorough knowledge of (qualitative) social scientific research methods and techniques;
- You have a demonstrable affinity with the energy domain and energy policy;
- You know how to communicate research results in a clear way to parties with diverse backgrounds, such as policymakers, companies and experts in various areas;
- You have excellent social skills and a sense of nuance. You are a good listener and have an eye for different perspectives and interests;
- Finally, you have an excellent verbal and written command of Dutch and English.

The Energy Transition Studies research group is carrying out a research programme for the energy transition. This programme focuses on the challenges facing the energy system to reduce CO2 emissions by 2050, the socio-economic aspects and the social side of the energy transition. Moreover, the group provides support for the monitoring and evaluation of Dutch energy and climate policy on behalf of the central government. The work is carried out both nationally and internationally. We work together with various parties in society, such as universities, consultants, institutions and companies.
The team is multidisciplinary. The various backgrounds combined make it possible to arrive at solutions that would not be achieved through individual efforts. Accordingly, you are challenged to work together. In addition, there is plenty of room for personal input in the inspiring team and we will invest heavily in your personal development. You can apply till the 27th of January 2021. The first round of interviews is scheduled on the 5th of Febraury 2021. The process comprises at least two (selection) rounds. After a positive selection, we will finish off the process by discussing terms and conditions of employment. We try to complete the interviews and assessment within 4 weeks.
