What will you be doing?
As a software developer, you are closely involved in the digitising of building and infrastructure. Various technological ingredients for the transformation of the sector can be found at TNO. Environmental and housing-shortage issues further increase the urgency to continue renewing the building and infrastructure sector with Building Information Modelling (BIM) technologies. Now for that extra incentive. As a software developer, you have demonstrated your ability to develop smart solutions with the latest technologies.
We are currently working on a technological proof of concept for an automatic test of the environmental performance of a virtual building in the design phase. For this, we are using web services developed by TNO. We call it BIM Bots technology
. Think of it as a series of web tools that use BIM data and do clever things with it which, were humans to perform the same tasks, would take a lot of time and energy. These smart, autonomous BIM Bots run separately from each other, although they interact within one network. They help to deal with major social challenges. One of many possibilities is the autonomous testing of a BIM with regard to Dutch Building Regulation laws and requirements. Your puzzle-solving and geometry skills will be useful here.
You’re arriving at an interesting moment. At this stage, the proof of concept is still a commission from the Government. In the next phase, we shall be talking with various players in the building industry as well as software suppliers to make them partners in our developments. Eventually, we want our knowledge and developments to be accessible to the entire (worldwide) building and infrastructure sector. Besides BIM Bots technology, enough other challenges in the sector will be waiting for you. Read more about safe design at TNO

You have a bit of a mind of your own in this respect, which is only a plus. What else can you offer?
At the least a degree in a technical field such as computer science, AI, machine learning or (statistical) data science. But those with a background in mathematics, applied physics, civil engineering or having specialised in BIM or ICT are also most welcome to apply.
