What will you be doing?

TNO is developing a new model of organizational culture that can help improve (safety) performance. For this purpose we interviewed several practitioners and scientists in the field of safety culture and/ or organizational culture. This provided insight on which factors are important according to these experts to understand organizational culture. Parallel, we executed a systematic review on papers that studied the influence of organizational culture on organizational performance (explanatory models). Both research activities are steps towards the development of a new evidence-based explanatory culture model.
The internship will focus on which factors determine successful organizational culture change. We need an overview of theories and methods from network science and social psychology (e.g. social network interventions such as role modeling, imitation, social diffusion and social proofing) that are most suitable for our research goal; better understand how the (group) dynamics of self-organizing networks within companies work and how these can be influenced. For this systematic review we want to determine important change principles for two distinctive target groups: employees working in companies in major hazard industries (e.g. petrochemical, oil and gas and construction) and executive governmental institutions responsible for licensing, supervision and inspection of and law enforcement in major hazard companies. Ultimately, the goal is to develop a new organizational culture change program for these target groups related to the explanatory culture model (under development) described above.
