What will be your role?

The department of Metabolic Health Research (MHR), develops technology and knowledge in the area of biomedical health. Together with (international) collaborators from academia, research institutes, public bodies and food, cosmetics and pharma industry we develop, directly implement and apply new technology and approaches in industrial applications and projects. In this way we help companies to innovate. Within the team Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and Biomarkers team we perform advanced analytical measurements in clinical samples from drug development studies. For the analysis we use AMS, chromatographic techniques and accurate mass spectrometry in our GLP-compliant and well equipped facility in Leiden.
We focus on microtracer and microdosing applications in early clinical studies and determine absolute bioavailability and mass balance for new drugs. Our measurement technology is so sensitive that the dose of tracers that are needed is so low, it does do not pose any risk for human health. This approach was found to be safe even for small children. This enables pharma companies to use microtracers in earlier stages of the research and collect data on pharmacokinetics but also on efficacy of new drugs in development.

Managers quote
‘Our workflows in microtracer research are unique. Our analysis is so sensitive, very low amounts of microtracer can be used. So low, that the labeled drug in these amounts has no effect on health. This enables use much earlier in the clinical phase, directly in humans. The drug development can be faster and animal experiments can be avoided’

Our team is expanding to match the growing interest of our customers. Currently we are looking for a study director. The study director is responsible for the scientific conduct of his or her study at TNO. The study director ensures successful method development, method qualification and supervises the analysis of clinical samples once these are received from collaborating clinical CRO’s.  The study director is in charge of a study starting with the writing of the study plan until reporting to the sponsor. Together with the project manager, the study director communicates directly with the sponsors and the clinical research organizations involved in the study.

You will join the dynamic team AMS & Biomarkers which is part of the department Metabolic Health Research. We are an international mix of approximately 20 technicians, study directors, scientists and project managers lead by a team leader. We are open, customer oriented, support each other and are also in for fun together. Currently, the study directors balance their work between working at home and in the office. Our lab facilities are state-of-the art, with currently two AMS systems and three accurate mass spectrometers, number of UPLC systems and growing. For our team members, we (TNO) offer different personal and technical development possibilities, from courses, training on a job or conference participation.
