What will you be doing?

Aerospace plays a crucial role in the daily lives of everyone on Earth. Communication, navigation and observation satellites as well as their innovative information systems, terminals and high-tech instruments are becoming a unique part of our planet's infrastructure. In your role as Senior System Engineer laser satellite communications, you develop instruments for optical communication between groundstations, plane, LEO and GEO. You will be working together with leading international partners and customers such as ESA, ESO, Airbus DS and many others.

The role of Systems Engineer at TNO puts you in the position of being the technical lead of the project teams. Meaning you are responsible for the development, creation and acceptance of the complete technical solution. You are the point of contact for our customers when it comes to the technical content of the project. In order to fulfill this role, you are in close contact you the people on your team. You are a born organizer, inspiring and motivating the team to get the best out of themselves and the results they deliver on. Because you are close to the team and the hardware, you know when which resources and tools can be used to streamline the technical processes.

Your team consists of experts from various fields, for instance: optics, mechanics, mechatronics and production (mechanical and optical manufacturing). Projects range from €500,000 to €5,000,000, and run for several years. The project organisation usually comprises a core team consisting of a Project Manager, System Engineer, Product Assurance Manager and MAIT (Manufacturing-Assembly-Integration-Testing) Manager, supported by a technical team. In this core team you will report to the project manager.

What do we require of you?

Because we are working on cutting edge technology in a high demanding environment, we are looking for someone with relevant experience as a systems engineer (at least 8 years) to join our vibrant team. Furthermore you recognise yourself in most of the points stated below.

You have:
  • Experience in the field of (optical) space instrumentation is a plus;
  • a good command of the English language, both written and spoken;
  • a customer-oriented mindset and have excellent problem analysis skills;
  • good negotiation and communication skills.

What can you expect of your work situation?

The Space Systems Engineering expert group develops and supplies optomechatronic instruments and systems for aerospace, ground-based astronomy and scientific research. The demands placed on these systems are generally challenging the limits of technology. Creating such instruments therefore calls for a thorough project organisation, in which experts in the fields of optics, mechatronics, manufacturing and testing work together in a multidisciplinary setting to achieve the desired result. The System Engineers are in charge of the technical realisation, which involves processes such as requirements analysis and verification, design trade-offs and budget management. The System Engineers work as members of a core project team together with the Project Manager, the Product Assurance Manager and the MAIT (Manufacturing-Assembly-Integration-Testing) Manager.
