The expertise group Applied Geosciences hosts about 70 professionals, for a large part earth scientists and subsurface engineers. Our project portfolio covers the entire chain of resource exploration, efficient production, subsurface storage, and the re-use and de-commissioning of existing infrastructure. Our project portfolio is diverse in scope and size: we manage large national research programs, participate in EU-funded research consortia, and provide consultancy services for the private sector. What will be your role?

As a technical specialist in the Subsurface Energy Transition team within the Applied Geosciences department, you will help develop subsurface technology solutions that will enable the transition towards a carbon neutral energy system. You will be working on topics such as large-scale energy storage in the subsurface, the safe and environmentally benign re-use of gas and electricity infrastructure for renewable energy production, and optimal integration of the different activities in the subsurface into the rapidly developing and diversifying new energy system. Your role will include developing models in order to assess these systems and creating tools to assist in visualizing results, which may include standalone software as well as web applications.

You will have many opportunities to work together with clients on developing innovative solutions for complex problems faced by the energy industry. You will also have the opportunity to be part of multi-disciplinary research projects with a diverse group of geoscientists and engineers, as well as policy and economic experts.

What we expect from you

Knowledge:
  • PhD/MSc in Applied Geoscience, Computational Science or Energy Technology with 3 years of working experience, preferably in a Dutch or European context.
  • Good conceptual knowledge of renewable energy technologies, in particular energy conversion (e.g. power-to-gas via hydrogen) and energy storage (electricity, hydrogen, heat). Affinity and willingness to learn subsurface rock-fluid interactions and subsurface transport processes on-the-job.
  • Working knowledge of GIS applications for spatial visualization and software development for computational models and web applications.
Qualifications:
  • Ability to lead and carry out research activities independently, taking responsibility for delivering quality work according to planning and within budget.
  • Proven experience of working in interdisciplinary technical projects, interacting with multiple stakeholders from research, industry and NGO’s. 
  • Experience with leading research tasks/activities and/or work packages in such projects is a plus.
  • Self-driven, independent, pro-active and a team player. 
Skills:
  • Scientific computing (with numerical analysis) and coding skills in Python, MATLAB, C++ and/or similar languages applied to solve mathematical modeling and optimization problems, as well as experience in working with version control (e.g. Git) and code repositories. Experience with user interfaces and visualization (e.g. Tkinter for Python) a plus.
  • Demonstrate ability to apply coding skills in the context of modeling and optimization problems for energy conversion, transport and storage.
  • Experience with software development including modern web applications (e.g. React, Angular), databases (e.g. PostgreSQL, MySQL), and interaction with APIs. Knowledge and practice with containerization (Docker) a plus.
  • Good communication skills, both written & verbal.

The selection process

Please apply before January 3, 2022. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on January 10, 2022. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
