What will you be doing?

For over a decade, we have been supporting the leading manufacturers of semiconductor equipment around the world with our knowledge of contamination control. In the past 5 years, we have expanded on this and are also working with this expertise to enable the development of devices that exhibit quantum properties. Experimental work is performed in our Van Leeuwenhoek Laboratory, which houses a wide range of facilities: in-house built ultraclean vacuum equipment, EUV exposure facilities, XPS surface analysis, SEM, equipment for nanoparticle detection and much more. One of our main goals is to support our partners worldwide and enable the introduction of quantum technologies into the market.
As a vacuum expert you will work in a multi-disciplinary and competitive environment where you will design, build and maintain state-of-the-art and customized vacuum systems. Based on your work, TNO and our partners will be able to produce new materials and devices that exhibit quantum properties (for example, the fabrication of Majorana qubits in collaboration with Microsoft). In this environment, TNO works closely with companies and universities in joint project. You will be taking part in mixed teams of technicians, engineers and experimentalists, and work closely together with colleagues from Microsoft and the TUDelft.

What do we require of you?

Quantum Technology is a fast-moving area, where developments are still at very low TRL and require cooperation between many different expertise. This call for constant communication, flexibility and adaptability. This is reflected in our teams: fast-changing project goals demand a high degree of flexibility from team members. Good team-working skills and the ability to operate well during demanding discussions are thus vital for achieving project goals. To be able to fulfil the role of experimentalist and operator it's important that you recognize yourself in this profile:
  • You have previous experience in setting up complex vacuum test setups.
  • You have a BSc, preferably experimental physics, surface-, plasma- or material physics.
  • You have experience with working in clean rooms.
  • You have experience and/or affinity in working with vacuum systems and/or MBE systems.
  • You are accurate.
  • You are flexible and resilient.
  • You have good interpersonal skills, which you can apply when interacting with colleagues and clients.

What can you expect of your work situation?

The Quantum Technology department is a young, international and dynamic environment. It was created in 2018 and presently consists of circa 35 employees, a majority of which highly educated in the field of quantum physics.
We work on a very large range of topics, serving our clients and partners with high level expertise in process and system engineering.
As a vacuum expert, you will find peers within the department as well as within the Nano instrumentation department with which we share offices and labs.

What can TNO offer you?

Work enjoyment means something different for each employee. This is why we offer a-la-carte terms and conditions of employment that you can switch around on a monthly basis. Flexible working hours (like 4 days x 9 hours) and different leave schemes mean that you can create a package attuned to your specific wishes.
TNO attaches great value to both your personal and your professional development. Many opportunities exist for you to develop: conferences, courses, workshops, coaching, intervision, mentoring and job rotation. At TNO you can orchestrate your own career.
