Internship | Automated synthesis methodology for generating a Decision Making algorithm
What will be your role?
At TNO, we develop software for Automated Driving vehicles. For this, different algorithms to act in different situations, have already been designed along with a manually designed, rule based algorithm that decides which action is currently best. To facilitate future expansion, it would be very beneficial to automate the design of the decision maker. Are you interested in improving the future developments for our AD vehicles? The EU-project SHOW involves a lot of different companies across Europe. The purpose of this project, among others, is to study the interaction of autonomous driving vehicles with Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs – cyclist and pedestrians). Within the project the following was developed and tested,
- A stop and go longitudinal controller to determine the ac(de)celeration required to handle traffic light intersections, based on v2x communication with the road side units of the traffic lights.
- A multi-phase braking approach to handle VRU violations at intersection crossings.
- Tactical layer (decision making) to handle the actions of the autonomous driving vehicle.
- A model to mimic the v2x information. This was developed to stage all the different possible scenarios that an autonomous vehicle can encounter in the real world.
What needs to be developed further?
The state machines in the tactical layer, for making all the decisions are ruled based and designed manually. The future step would be to investigate and find (one/multiple) possible approach(es) to automatically deduce these rules/states for all future implementations. Your tasks would involve,
- Literature study on automatic synthesis of rules for autonomous driving.
- Define limits of such a system.
- Model a system based on the defined limits, for a few different intersection situations.
- Compare the findings of the developed model, to that of the ruled based model.
- Test the developed model in Simulations.
- If time permits, the developed model can be test at low speeds in one of TNO’s autonomous vehicles.
What we expect from you
- We require that you are familiar with system and control theory concepts.
- Knowledge about modeling system state machines.
- Knowledge and working experience with MATLAB and Simulink.
- Experience with Linux and ROS is beneficial.
- We like you to start as soon as possible.
The thesis fits to a 6-9 month project (based on full time availability).
What can you expect of your work situation?
You will work at the Integrated Vehicle Safety department of TNO on the Automotive Campus in Helmond (depending on the actual COVID rules). In this department people are working on developing software for automated driving vehicles. The developed software is tested in pilots and on the public road. You will work in an open area. One of our employees will be your mentor. He/She will help you to get acquainted with the department and give you guidelines for your research in order to help you to get the best out of it.
