Internship | Safety assessment of automated vehicles: estimate the likelihood of scenarios by combining edge case

About this position

Automated vehicles (AVs) need to safely deal with all kinds of scenarios. Datasets are used to determine the variety of these scenarios. Since huge amounts of data are needed, non-identically distributed datasets are to be combined. This affects the estimation of the likelihood of the scenarios. Automated vehicles (AVs) have become widely popular in recent years since they have the potential to bring several benefits such as increased road safety, traffic throughput and fuel efficiency. To achieve higher levels of automation, an AV must be capable of dealing with all kinds of scenarios. It is a challenge to determine the variety of scenarios that an AV may encounter and one popular approach is to use collected data from traffic to automatically determine the scenarios that an AV may need to deal with. Based on the collected data, statistics of the encountered scenarios can be estimated. A typical dataset contains continuous recordings of naturalistic driving data. Such a dataset contains mostly straightforward scenarios that one typically encounters in daily traffic. Let us call this the dataset with “normal data”. Another popular approach to collect data is using so-called “event data recorders”. Such data recorders only collect data during special “events”, e.g., when the driver is suddenly braking heavily. Such datasets typically contain scenarios in which accidents are nearly avoided. Let us call this the dataset with “edge case data”. Obviously, the “normal data” is not identically distributed as the “edge case data”. In this project, the goal is to investigate what kind of scenario statistics can be estimated by combining the “normal data” and the “edge case data”, despite the fact that the datasets are not identically distributed.

What will be your role?

During this assignment you will be investigating the following research questions:

  • Methods to estimate the likelihood of scenarios based on “normal data” are known. How can we use the “edge case data” to improve the estimated statistics?
  • How does this affect the uncertainty of the estimated likelihoods?

Your assignment
To answer the research questions, you will:

  • Perform a short literature review on this problem.
  • Start with simple known probability distributions. This makes the experiment easy and it may even be possible to have analytic solutions to the problem.
  • Investigate on more complex (but known) probability distributions.
  • Apply developed theory on real datasets.
  • Give a final presentation & write a report and preferably a short article.

  • Good communication in English
  • Experience with Python, MATLAB and/or R. Python is preferred
  • Grades higher than average
