Internship | Tooling for Terminology Curation

About this position

In many situations a group of people (e.g. a project team, a standardization committee) find it difficult to reach a crisp, clear and common understanding of the words and phrases that its team-members use. This difficulty emerges as misunderstandings, and errors being made, e.g. in specifications of information systems, standards, program code, and more. TNO has devised a process to resolve such issues, and has used this to overcome such difficulties in different situations. This has created a need for establishing a set of IT tools that can be used to support the creation and maintenance (curation) of terminologies. A specification for such tooling is also being developed.

What will be your role?

Your task will be to create tools as specified (and enhance the specs where appropriate), make them work in development environments for programmers ( (e.g. VSCode, docker) and other authors (that write texts using e.g. LaTeX, wiki’s, Github pages, Docusaurus), integrate them with CI/CD pipes (github/gitlab), and use them yourself as you write the technical parts of the tool’s documentation.

The core of the work will be done in a small team at TNO in Groningen, which interacts frequently with the Concepts and Terminology Working Group of the Trust over IP community, which is part of the Linux Foundation.

What we expect from you

For starters, we expect you to be able to understand the concepts/ideas behind the specifications. Next, we expect you to be proficient with dev tools (e.g. github/gitlab, docker), different text-formats (e.g. markdown, HTML, LaTeX, JSON, YAML), various programming languages suitable for text-reprocessing – in short: the capabilities needed to fulfill the stated tasks. Finally, we expect you to write code that others can easily understand, maintain and extend. And of course, we expect you to be able to efficiently and effectively collaborate in the smaller and larger teams you will be working with.
