Internship | Traction model for high performance off-road (catenary/tracked) applications

About this position

Are you interested in contributing to a more sustainable future? In the powertrains department, we work to develop modern means of transport and specialty applications such that they meet performance requirements, strict gas regulations and contribute to a greener future. Not only the on-road transport sector is confronted with needs for electrification. With an even larger number of different vehicles, machines and platforms, the non-road mobile machinery sector also has clear interest, challenges and potential benefits by electrification/hybridisation of the power packs in its numerous applications. The focus currently draws towards various ground based platforms with wheeled or specifically catenary traction systems used in many civilian and military platforms ranging from e.g. excavators to tanks. Confronted with specific challenges of widely diverse operation, an extension of modelling capabilities is needed to accommodate for specific design, performance and assessment and enable both optimized and flexible solutions. The proposed assignment is suggested to contribute a larger framework by filling one of the technical gaps in our currently available toolbox.

What will be your role?

You will detail your assignment to fit both technical scope and duration to conduct a background study to determine approach and implementation of a traction model for multi-body, multi-domain catenary/tracked platform simulation.

The goal of the assignment is to research the mechanisms and define a performance traction and loss model for off-road tracked platforms suitable for modelling of platform performance and energy management in specific mission use cases.

Assignment tasks:

  • Literature research on applicable traction mechanism and conditions for tracked platforms;
  • List requirements, specifications and approach for a simulation model (multi-body platform and powertrain domains);
  • Implement an effective model to fit in a modular multi-domain environment;
  • Define application scenarios as performance events and endurance missions with suitable visualization of performance and results;
  • Reporting.

What we expect from you

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering;
  • You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering;
  • You enjoy developing innovative solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and pragmatism;
  • Good communication skills;
  • Experienced in Matlab/Simulink;
  • A background in vehicle dynamics and powertrain domain is a pre-requisite.
