Internship | Performance analysis of vortex generators for wind turbine blades

About this position

Vortex Generators (VGs) are widely applied in wind turbines to reduce the effects of flow separation and maintain lift. Design of the VGs and their layout is usually done empirically and supported by 2D CFD simulations which are highly uncertain acknowledging the 3D nature of the flow in the root region where these VGs are commonly placed. To this means a real field experiment on a large wind turbine is carried out where measurements with pressure sensors, tufts and power and loads are performed to investigate the difference both with and without VGs in several configurations. In addition to that simulations are being carried out and compared to validate the design approach.

What will be your role?

In this project you will study the effect of the VGs on the turbine both experimentally and numerically. To analyze the experiment, data processing software needs to be used. Several CFD simulations have already been performed which need to be compared to the measurements, and optionally you will perform additional CFD simulations.
Your work will be carried out in our Wind Energy department. This department houses approximately 60 experts with an in-depth knowledge on wind energy technology. You may work from our offices in Petten and/or Delft, but a visit to Petten every two weeks is desirable for an in person meeting.

What we expect from you

We are looking for MSc students in relevant areas i.e. (Wind)Energy Technology, Aerospace Technology, Mechanical Engineering etc., with the following characteristics:

  • Enthusiasm for research and technology development;
  • Interest in wind energy;
  • Technical knowledge of wind turbines and aerodynamics;
  • Independent working attitude;
  • Knowledge of Pointwise, Paraview, OpenFOAM and SU2 or willingness to learn these tools, including data analysis using a scripting tool like Matlab;
  • Good knowledge of the English language;
  • Available to work at least 32 hours a week for a period of 4 to 9 months.
