Researcher circular concrete structures
Contributing to the structural safety of concrete structures in a circular built environment. Envision it. Become a researcher of circular concrete structures at TNO in Delft.
About this position
Concrete and other stony building materials play a valuable role in our society. More durable and longer-lasting concrete therefore makes an important contribution to making the construction sector more sustainable. And of society as a whole. At TNO, we work on making concrete structures more sustainable from three perspectives: materials, structural behaviour and reliability.
What will be your role?
As a researcher, you have in-depth knowledge of the structural behaviour of concrete structures. You’re passionate about using non-traditional materials for concrete structures. Materials that contribute to the sustainability and circularity goals that the Netherlands faces in the coming years. You’ll be focussing on issues related to structural safety, working with top experts from relevant fields on methods to apply innovative materials in construction and to best predict the behaviour of innovative concrete structures. You’ll test, model, and predict the behaviour of structures made of non-traditional concrete mixtures and reinforcement types. With your research, you’ll ensure that short- and long-term structural safety and usability is demonstrated. You’ll contribute to the drafting of a new generation of building codes for circular concrete structures.
You’ll usually be dealing with several projects at once, working independently and autonomously. Together with colleagues, you’ll answer the questions we receive from stakeholders, for example, Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch public works and water management agency), provinces, municipalities, engineering firms, contractors, and materials producers. These parties come calling when specialist knowledge is required. For example, for predicting behaviour or better quantifying the safety level of non-traditional structures. Or for deciding which innovative materials can safely be used in bridges, viaducts, and buildings. You’ll regularly attend consultations with clients, for example to clarify the research question or to present your results.
Your project team is multidisciplinary and comprises researchers from various fields, such as civil engineering, materials science, and reliability engineering. Within such a team, you’ll actively help devise possible solutions and carry out research. You’ll use analytical methods, numerical models, and experiments. At times, you’ll also perform in-situ measurements or inspections of existing constructions. You’ll interpret and analyse all the results of your research and work them into a clear report.
