Internship | Citizen engagement in environmental policy making in the urban environment

About this position

Sustainable societal changes are urgently needed in context of health, climate, energy and mobility. This is especially relevant for the urban environment. Citizen engagement is crucial, e.g. to tailor interventions (actions) to the local context and to help measure success of interventions. Within this internship we will explore how to empower citizens to be involved. We focus on the effective use of air quality data in this context; air quality has direct links to each of these transitions, e.g. by effective reduction of emissions (energy, climate, mobility) or improving health through air quality improvements and reducing exposure to pollutants.

What will be your role?

TNO is working with various citizen science initiatives in the air quality domain. Within these projects an important aspect is to empower citizens to come to a level playing field with government and/or companies, to ensure social cohesion and more effective, balanced policy making. One of the key challenges is to determine how this empowerment should take place (whether through technology, or any other manner) and to keep citizens engaged and motivated for a longer period of time. This is where you come in!

you will begin your internship with writing a research proposal, supported by a literature study on existing initiatives, projects and research where citizen science and urban transitions meet. Our colleagues will help you gain insight in the latest technologies for monitoring air quality and relevant projects within TNO in this context. Your task is to come to possible solutions for longer term engagement of citizens in data-driven policy making related to one of the mentioned transitions. Pending on your interest, the actual research can range from developing a big data approach for improving information streams to citizens to more social approaches for empowering citizens to let their voices be heard. This is up to you!
