About this position

The research group Opto-mechatronics focuses on the conceptual design of high-tech optomechatronics systems, in close cooperation with the research groups Optics, Space Systems Engineering, Nano-Instrumentation and Instrument Manufacturing. Large commercial projects are executed for customers in the domains of Space & Scientific instrumentation, Semicon & Quantum and Smart Industry (Flexible Manufacturing). The role of the group within the strong global position of the Dutch mechatronics industry is that of supplier of breakthrough technology. Core areas for the group for the coming years are robust adaptive optomechatronics modules and control systems; industrial instrumentation for in-line inspection and control, and nano-optomechatronical instruments for applications in next-generation lithography, metrology and medical diagnostics. The group has a close collaboration with several universities and research institutes, a large network in industry and contributes to the HighTech ecosystem as a whole.

What will be your role?

The position entails research, development and experimentation on optomechanical instruments and equipment for nanoscale characterization. Examples include IR-AFM, quantum sensing and multimodal imaging.

Together with your colleagues you will achieve technical breakthrouhgs through technology push as well as customer pull. Work encompasses both proposing solutions based on academic insights and working with customers to show feasibility of solutions. You are able to start from a Design Of Experiment and work through the data analysis to validation of your idea, including SNR budget breakdown and analysis algorithm validation. You are also able to set up system requirements, conceptual designs and experimental setups to demonstrate key aspects of the proposed solutions; both as TNO-owned techhnology demonstrators and as prototypes for high-profile international customers. Solutions may be based on a range of insights into a.o. basic physics, instrument design, control solutions, and analysis algorithms.

What we expect from you

  • You have a MSc with at least 4 years of additional working experience or (preferably) a PhD in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering or (applied) physics.
  • Your experience clearly shows insight into the combination of at least mechanics and physics; knowledge of micro- and nano-characterization through scanning probe methods including materials and material properties is crucial; knowledge of how to build a nano-instrument such as SPM is advantageous, as is knowledge about microfabrication technologies.
  • You have a proven scientific track record through publications in relevant journals.
  • In addition to your theoretical background, you have experience in the design and realization of test setups, and in the design and execution of complex experiments.
  • You have a pioneering mentality, and you are comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with scientific and engineering challenges.
  • You have good communication skills. With your energy, creativity and a boundless curiosity, you can convince and inspire colleagues and customers alike.
