Radiated Noise Technical Consultant | The Hague
Contribute to measure sound, model sound and predict how it propagates through solids, water and air. Envision it. Become Radiated Noise Technical Consultant at TNO in The Hague.
About this position
We are looking for a devoted new colleague to further expand TNO’s Acoustics & Sonar (A&S) department in general and our radiated noise team in particular. Acoustics & Sonar is the department where all of TNO’s acoustic expertise comes together. The group consists of approximately 85 people, including the people from the electro-mechanical workshop. The work atmosphere is casual and informal, we feel the drive to deliver world-class results, but manage to maintain a casual and informal atmosphere. The A&S department covers a wide range of topics, from sonar applications and noise control to ultrasonic systems. We measure sound, model sound and predict how it propagates through solids, water and air. We use sound to our advantage for finding objects, such as submarines, sea mines, intruders, underwater infrastructure, sea life, etc. Sometimes sound can be a nuisance and have adverse effects if it is perceived as too loud or leads to the detection, classification or identification of military naval platforms. In these cases we know how to reduce the sound levels and to design measures to decrease the adverse effects for platforms, humans and sea mammals. For industrial applications – primarily in the aviation, semiconductor, and medical industry - we are developing innovative ultrasonic sensors and instrumentation for integrity monitoring and composition analysis. As radiated noise technical consultant you will typically be active in multiple applied research and development (R&D) projects to develop solutions for our various customers. You will use your knowledge and experience to help translate our customer’s needs into solutions. Projects vary in size and nature, from researching the potential of a theoretical concept to building equipment that works in the field, and from small projects running several weeks to large international consortium projects running over the course of multiple years. Each project has its own team, and no two projects are the same, so expect lots of opportunities to further develop yourself.
What will be your role?
The A&S radiated noise domain is focused on defense applications and civilian applications. Civilian applications include rail, road traffic, industrial and aviation noise assessment and compliance, industrial and shipping noise impact assessment on marine life. Military applications include the assessment of naval platform’s underwater acoustic signatures caused by on-board machinery and hydrodynamic sources, and providing solutions to reduce those for safe operations. Also, we assess the impact of noise caused by military exercises (for example shooting noise). We provide society with knowledge and means to better protect people and sea life against adverse effects of sound.
As a radiated noise technical consultant you are an important link between TNO and our clients. You think about how we can convert our often complex expertise, knowledge and techniques into useful results that customers can use to move forward. The focus for you is on customers in both the civilian and the defense domain, such as the Ministry of Infrastructure, local municipalities, and the Ministry of Defense.
You are already involved at the start of projects. In this way you think along with both the clients and our project leaders and experts to arrive at the right research questions. Sometimes you take the lead in writing quotations. You continuously check whether everyone is on the same page and you think about converting raw results into clear conclusions or recommendations that have a meaningful impact on our client’s business case. You have the ambition to advise on our clients’ strategic science & technology investment roadmaps as you grow into your role. You’re not necessarily the technical expert in all aspects of the project but you have the passion and drive to understand our technological capabilities.
If you feel that you can help us make progress in these areas and are looking for a job that is meaningful to society, offers lots of variation, and will challenge you as a technical consultant, you’ve found your match!
