Team leader Instrument making

Contributing to tomorrow's world. Envision it. Become a team leader instrument making at TNO in Delft.

About this position

Would you like to help create critical equipment for applications within the aerospace, scientific instrumentation and high-tech industries - often pushing the boundaries of what is possible? Do you like coordinating and working closely with a team of highly skilled instrument makers? Then you should apply for the position of team leader in TNO's instrument making group.

What will be your role?

Instrument makers at TNO Industry work on the development and practical realisation of tooling, test setups, demonstrators, prototypes and product parts. This involves critical equipment for applications within the aerospace, scientific instrumentation and high-tech industries. The equipment could be used in missions in the Earth observation or satellite communications market, but also in the semiconductor industry or, for example, for developments needed to support our ambitions in quantum computing.
As team leader, you will be the first point of contact for project leaders regarding instrument maker's work. You will ensure that the work is divided properly distributed among team members, make cost estimates and keep track of the work schedule. You will also maintain a network with suppliers, other TNO workshops and maintenance firms.
You help instrument makers in their work and their professional development and enable them to function autonomously within projects and in instrument making. You have a vision of the future needs for people & resources, as well as the role of the instrument makers group within the TNO Unit Industry. Early involvement in the design phases of the projects is important in terms of manufacturability - also in some cases as preparation for (industrial) serial production - and the use of the appropriate and latest manufacturing techniques. You will put this into practice in coordination with the research manager of the Space Systems Engineering department.
You will maintain the quality of the work, spot opportunities for the group at other departments and liaise closely with project leaders.

You and your team will work together for various departments of the TNO Unit Industry. For instance, you will work on aerospace, semicon and quantum technology projects that will offer plenty of variety and that involve many High Tech aspects essentially requiring your knowledge and skills. Although Instrument Making is part of the Space Systems Engineering expertise group in our organisation, it works on a wide range of High Tech developments.
Within the Unit Industry, the Space Systems Engineering expertise group develops and supplies optomechatronic instruments and systems for use in space, ground-based astronomy, scientific research and high-tech industry. The demands placed on these systems generally push the boundaries of what is technically feasible. Production of these systems therefore requires a robust project organisation in which experts in optics, mechatronics, manufacturing and testing collaborate in a multidisciplinary setting to achieve the intended result. These projects are spearheaded by the Space System Engineering project managers. They typically work with a core team consisting of a System Engineer, Product Assurance manager and an MAIT (Manufacturing-Assembly-Integration-Testing) manager who jointly provide planning and manage the team. The Space Systems Engineering group also provides expertise for the development and realisation of test setups, demonstrators, prototypes and instruments from a team of MAIT engineers and instrument makers.

"I am delighted that my work is contributing to the development of new technologies which can lead to further progress. It’s so exciting to be involved from the very first stage, which consists of a purely scientific idea, and to help this develop into an application that will benefit the society of tomorrow.”
