Internship | Deployment of simulation models in the cloud

About this position

The cloud as an on-demand service of computing resources provides potentially valuable tools for the use of simulation models. The ability to create accessible simulations with the option to scale your resources up or down as required will help in dealing with the complex simulation models of the present, and the future.

What will be your role?

In practice cloud-based simulation is a largely unexplored field. It is unclear to what degree the advantages of deploying simulation models in the cloud will outweigh the potential disadvantages. How does cloud deployment differ from previous simulation environments? How do simulation components find one another in the cloud? Should there be a middleware to manage communications between simulation components? Is the cloud suitable for distributed simulations as well as for parallel simulations? In this project, you will dive deeper into these types of questions. The expected outline for this project includes an analysis on previous work related to cloud-based simulation, preparation and configuration of the models to be deployed, model deployment (both cloud and non-cloud), based on research questions that are likely to evolve as the project progresses.

What we expect from you

  • Student near the end of their master education in an applicable field such as computer science
  • Experience with simulation is recommended
  • Affinity and experience with programming languages
  • Able to do a mix of theoretical and (mostly) technical work
  • Ability to adapt and steer the project as new knowledge is obtained
