Assistant fieldworker and borehole descripter
Contribute to understanding the Dutch subsurface. Envision it. Become an assistant fieldworker and drill descriptor at TNO in Utrecht.
What will be your role?
Introduction:
In order to understand the Dutch surface, we drill and measure it. As a combined drill descriptor, fieldworker, and lab technician at the Geological Survey of the Netherlands, you’ll assist in mapping out geological opportunities and risks.
What will be your role?
The Geomodelling department creates three-dimensional maps of the Dutch subsurface up to around 500 metres deep. Our maps are based, amongst other things, on data from more than half a million drillings in our DINO database. This impressive number is growing thanks to the National Key Registry of the Subsurface (BRO). Nevertheless, we are and will continue to run our own drilling programme. In fact, at selected locations and depths, we want to collect data that we won’t receive through third parties via BRO. Moreover, collecting data themselves keeps our geologists in touch with the subsurface they are mapping.
You’ll work in the laboratory in which we photograph and describe drill samples and extract samples. Your job will consist of describing sediments taken from the Dutch subsurface and analysing them. You’ll also provide support in the planning and execution of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands’ fieldwork.
What we expect from you
You have a passion for geology and at least 5 years’ experience in soil drilling or other soil investigation. You have field experience conducting manual or mechanical onshore or offshore drillings. You have experience describing drill samples from, for example, geotechnical, archaeological, or environmental practice. From this expertise, you want to continue your development in the geological description of drill samples according to the Geological Standard Drill Description Method (SBB). You’re eager to learn. Initially, you’ll be trained by an experienced colleague. You’re meticulous and work neatly. You’re also curious. In due course, you’ll look for ways to further technically develop descriptive practice.
What you'll get in return
Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.000,- and € 4.000,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180,-). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
