Internship | Flow induced pulsation with jet-acoustic resonance
About this position
High amplitude tonal sound can be generated in closed-in side branches of pipe networks. This phenomenon is called FIP (Flow Induced Pulsations). In a number of (field) cases, configurations are found in which the inlet side branch diameter is much smaller than the header diameter and these systems showed a clear tonal noise due to FIP. However, the prediction of these tones and the amplitudes are very difficult to predict. The hypothesis is that the main interaction is not as a flat shear layer, but that due to the smaller inlet diameter the interaction is more jet – acoustic like. The study of this interaction is the main purpose in this assignment.
What will be your role?
The primary focus on this student assignment is on the experimental evaluation of the jet acoustic interaction. To test this, a setup must be constructed. Current ideas range from inlet – header (with variable inlet diameter, variable inlet location and variable header length) to a jet excited with a loudspeaker. During the literature search phase, the setup must be design in collaboration with the lab-staff. If time allows: CFD can be used to evaluate the interaction.
What we expect from you
We are looking for a student who is enthusiastic, critical and a team-player. We expect you to work hard and independently on your own project, but ask for help if needed. Knowledge on fluid mechanics and experience with experimentation is highly preferred.
The experimental activities will be performed in Delft. The analysis of the results can also be done at TNO office in Delft.
Duration: 6 to 9 months.
