About this position

The chemical industry needs a transition to a sustainable future using renewable energy as well as biological and circular feedstock to reach these future goals. We want develop plasma processes for the (bulk) chemical industry as an enabling technology to meet the climate goals.

What will be your role?

We are looking for a research-engineer to join the fast growing plasma team. Among the academics, the research-engineer is the one with the practical know-how. Thanks to you, the scientists can count on reproducible experiments in projects involving process and equipment development. 

We are looking for a candidate who likes to work together with colleagues within but also outside of TNO. The job will be carried out at Brightsite situated at Chemelot in Geleen where we are developing new innovations with respect to electrification and plasma technology for (bulk) chemical processes.

You are responsible for the experiments to be carried out and collect and process measurement data together with colleagues, scientists and project leaders. As we are expanding the our lab facilities with set ups that go beyond the state-of-the-art, you will contribute to building and commissioning of our new systems. You also provide support in formulating research questions or a research design. You are able to organize your work well and have a critical attitude with respect to evaluation of results. You report results and conclusions in a transparent and insightful way.

  • BSc in Chemical engineering.
  • You are organized, structured and accurate in executing and reporting experimental research.
  • You are handy at the lab and not scared to pick up tools when it’s needed.
  • You have an eye for safety of yourself and your colleagues.
  • Team player with good oral and written communication skills in English.
  • A proactive attitude.

TNO as an employer

Within TNO you will work in the Climate, Air & Sustainability department. This is a versatile department of almost 60 passionate researchers, consultants and mathematicians in the field of life cycle assessment (LCA) and other impact methods, with domain knowledge about the recycling and chemical industry and extensive knowledge about analyzing and predicting the impact of human actions on the environment. climate and air quality. In addition, this team helps policy makers at governments and decision makers at companies further in the transformation to a more sustainable and cleaner economy. The team is headquartered in Utrecht, but often works together with other teams (for example from The Hague, Amsterdam and Geleen). You have Geleen as your base location, where you work together with a few colleagues from CAS (plasma technology and program managers) in the middle of Brighlands Chemelot campus with the Brightsite partners and the industrial parties in Chemelot. Brightsite is a knowledge partnership with Sitech services, TNO, Brightlands Chemelot Campus and Maastricht University.

The selection process

Please apply before the 17th of February 2023. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The first round is planned for the 28th of February 2023. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.

As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (The Dutch General Information and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening. Read more about security screening.
