Internship | Design and investigation of hollow core photonic bandgap fiber for
About this position
Hollow core photonics bandgap fiber (HC-PBF) is a promising technology for a broad range of advanced optical systems covering from lighting to sensing. Different from classical solid glass optical fiber, HC-PBF confines light within its hollow core due to the periodic bandgap structured cladding. Depending on each application, the HC-PBF can be designed and tuned to meet specified requirement. The wave propagation and behaviour can be studied using numerical simulations. In this project, we aim to investigate the HC-PBF for sensing purpose.
What will be your role?
In order to know the key parameters in the design of the sensor, you will be working on the modelling of the sensor. After acquainted with the subject through literature review and technical reading, an analytical model will be derived to understand the working principle of the sensor. After that, numerical tools will help to get a deeper understanding of the details. The sensing performance will be studied through systematic modelling by tuning HC-PBF geometry and light wave conditions. Besides that, sensitivity and tolerance analysis can be done to understand the robustness of the system, when certain parameters change. By the end of the project, experimental validation of HC-PBF behaviour and sensing performance can be performed. Here you can help with performing measurements, and analysing the results from these measurements to understand what can be improved for future iterations.
What we expect from you
Preferably you are a motivated master student in Physics or Engineering, that is familiar with numerical modelling methods. Knowledge of EM-theory and/or photonics is preferred. Data processing and analysis will be part of your work as well.
