Internship | Re-activating recycled old cement for use in new concrete

About this position

In order for the building industry to become more sustainable, especially the cement production has to be reconsidered since it produces more than 5 % of the annual CO2-emmission worldwide. At the same time, circularity has become a prerequisite to enable a sustainable society. For concrete structures, this means that one option for circularity is to make new concrete from old concrete. However, since the old cement has spent its reactivity, re-activation is required. Moreover, since part of the recycled old concrete milled to ultrafine, cement-size particles is milled sand and gravel, the old cement in the recycled ultrafines is lower than may be anticipated. Hence, some reactive components have to be added also from volume proportion considerations.

What will be your role?

We are looking for a student with a strong affinity for practical work, to investigate the effect of activators on the binding capacity of recycled old cement. To this effect you will mix and cast your own mortar and test them for hardening, strength development and elasticity. In addition, monitoring of properties like electric conductivity, pH and Ca-concentrations in the chemical laboratory will be part of the research.

What we expect from you

You will write an internship report or master thesis in which you not only present the research programme and the rationale behind it and the results but you will also include a concise interpretation and discussion with respect to the effect of activators on the performance of the recycled old cement as sustainable new binder for concrete.
